Chapter 45 Do It Herself
Annelise tipped the invitation between her fingers, one eyebrow arching as she fixed Herbert with a chilly smile. “Go home and let Madam Kendrick know. Silverleaf Clinic will be there on time. Hope nothing goes wrong for you.”
Herbert snorted like she was a joke. “Do you have any idea who the Kendricks are? Nothing ever goes wrong for us. Around here, the law is whatever we say. You’d better remember that, kid.”
Annelise popped a fruit candy into her mouth, her eyes so dark they seemed bottomless. “Kendricks. I’ll remember.”
Herbert barely gave her a second glance, arrogance oozing off him as he strode away.
She watched his back with a slight narrowing of her eyes.
Herbert didn’t take his twisted arm seriously at first. It wasn’t until he stepped out of the alley and got into his car that the pain hit.
Why did his hand suddenly feel numb, like the nerves had cut out?
He tried to shake it off, but it was like his whole arm was disconnected, useless and limp.
“Home. Now. I need Rosalie!” Herbert gasped.
Cold sweat broke out across his brow.
Was he crippled for real?
“No,” Herbert muttered, his face draining of color. “Rosalie will fix it. She always does.”
The driver glanced over his shoulder. “Sir?”
“Step on it! Faster!” Herbert barked, his panic mounting.
Back at the alley, Annelise let her gaze drop, the frost in her eyes lingering.
People were still watching them.
Isabella seemed lost, out of sorts.
Annelise bent and picked up the basket of groceries, a smile curving her lips. “Let’s get home. My friends can’t wait for your shrimp.”
Isabella seemed to return to herself. “Yes, of course. I almost forgot, silly me.’
The crowd didn’t break up, but Annelise kept things natural, nodding to her neighbors as she supported Isabella. “Gil- da, did you get some pumpkin?”
Gilda colored slightly. “Annie, you get your grandma home. Looks like she has something weighing on her mind.”

Her calm seemed to settle things. The gossipy neighbors held their tongues. After all, everyone knew each other.
Madge joined in, helping bundle up the groceries. “Annie, don’t take it seriously. Gilda and the others aren’t trying to be cruel.”
“I know,” Annelise replied quietly. “I know who to blame.”
She knew exactly where to settle her accounts.
Madge felt relieved, but some unease lingered. Folks avoided walking past the clinic.
Isabella had lived in this neighborhood for such a long time. No one had ever heard whispers like these before.
It was enough to make anyone nervous. By evening, the clinic felt a lot emptier.
