The only thing I could think about as the headmistress went on was that this was the worst ever timing.

I mean, there was never a good time for six people to die, but we weren’t half ready for this.

Yet, I somehow understood why some of our courses were so viciouswhy they pushed us so hard.

There were thingspeople out there in the Six Packlands, who were dangerousothers who were targeted. Hunted.

And we have to be prepared.

That will be all for now, unless there are any concerns,” Varra continued, her tone sharp and unwavering. Otherwise, you will work with this arrangement until the next three weeks when the female dorms will be fully restored.”

A tense silence settled over the crowd.

What about the other issue?A thirdyear male’s voice cut through the tension, filled with barely contained

anger.

Varra’s gaze flicked toward him, unimpressed. What issue?

The student scoffed, shaking his head in disbelief.

Are there any more weird wolves hiding among us? Maybe they should turn themselves in before more people die. Or before we’re forced to share our space again!

A murmur of agreement spread through the crowd, uneasy and simmering with hostility.

Dhara tensed beside me, her hand twitching against mine. Instinctively, I squeezed it in silent reassurance, meeting Mona’s eyes over her shoulder.

We weren’t ratting her out. Period.

Now, it made so much sense why Dhara never used her gifts outside of our dorm, why she kept to herself, why she didn’t let anyone know what she was. No one knew she was a Terra Wolf.

I didn’t know why she had trusted us on the first day, why she hadn’t hidden it from us. But I was glad she hadn’t.

Now, we would protect her.

We won’t let anything happen to you,Mona whispered fiercely, and for the umpteenth time since the flood, I saw something flicker in Dhara’s usually calm, detached expression.

Fear.

It was unsettling. Dhara was never thisfazed.

We promise,I added softly.

She exhaled, barely nodding.

But the hostility around us was rising.

Why didn’t we know those abominations existed?Another student shouted, his voice dripping with disgust. They could be anywhere, walking among us like Raine had, and we’d have no clue!

Do they only control water?Someone else added, their voice tight with uncertainty.

We should hunt them before the assassins come back and kill us all just for harboring them!

More murmurs of agreement rippled through the students, tension rolling through the courtyard like a wave. My heart pounded.

This was wrong. This was so wrong.

We will do no such thing!Varra’s voice cracked through the air, her authority silencing the rising chaos in an instant. Her amber eyes burned with fury. The board has already discussed this issue, and after today’s events, we will be moving forward.

The Vice Headmaster, Mr. Durnham, stepped forward, looking deeply displeased. Headmistress, I hardly think-

She raised a hand, silencing him. Enough.”

Turning back to us, she shot us all glares before continuing.

A new course will be added to your curriculum, she said, letting her words sink in. It will be called The Gifts. Not only will it introduce you to these special wolves who have spent their lives in hiding, but it will allow you to gain an appreciation for why they are needed.”

A heavy pause.

The moon goddess makes no mistakes. These wolves are not abominations. They are gifts to us.”

A visible ripple of unease moved through the students.

Varra let the moment stretch, daring anyone to speak against her.

When no one did, she continued.

History has painted them as dangerous because the world fears power it cannot control. Her voice was level, even. The assassins you saw today are part of an elite faction known as The Venatorum. They are misled, highly trained, and dangerous. They target those with Gifts, not because they are a threat, but because they believe their existence disrupts the balance of power. And make no mistakethey will return.

A ripple of fear spread through me. I had no idea why, but it did. For Dhara, maybe?

Varra’s gaze hardened. I am not asking you to love wolves with these abilities. But if there are any more here, they will not be hunted. They are not the enemy.

A hesitant silence followed.

Until someone challenged her.

What about what Raine did? If they can do that, why shouldn’t we hunt them? That seems like a disruption of power balance to me,” the woman argued.

Varra’s expression remained unreadable.

Raine was terrified. Her wolf reacted in selfdefense. We are lucky the entire school wasn’t flooded. It is unfortunate that she took lives in the process, but it was not out of malice.” Her voice dropped lower, quieter. That poor girl died with one emotion in her heart.”

A pause.

Terror.”

A shudder passed through me.

No one spoke.

No one dared.

I swallowed hard, my mind spinning.

Was this what Varra meant a few weeks ago? When she warned us that dangerous people were targeting us across the Six Packlands?
