We were all gathered at assembly in the courtyard, the eeriness of loss hanging thick in the air.

Six students were dead.

Including the Tidal Wolf the assassins had come for.

Headmistress Varra stood at the front, composed but seething, her sharp eyes scanning over the student body. Beside her, the Vice Headmaster, Mr. Durnham, a stern–looking man with silver hair and a permanent scowl, and Senior Head of Department, Mrs. Lorne, a tall woman with dark skin and piercing grey eyes, flanked her on either side.

Their presence alone was enough to tell us how serious this was. We rarely saw them unless something monumental happened. And this? This was beyond that.

“The assassins were not welcomed here,” Varra spoke, her tone dangerously even. “They infiltrated this academy and targeted a student–one that, apparently, no one knew was gifted in this way.”

A murmur rippled through the crowd. My throat tightened as I sniffled, still shaken. Her name had been Raine–ironic, but not random.

She was a third–year student, someone who had lived among us, laughed with us, studied with us. And none of us had any idea what she really was.

It wasn’t strange that I didn’t know. I only got here. But she had been here for three years and not even her closest friends knew. But if the assassins came for her specifically, that meant one thing.

Someone knew.

Someone told.

The assassins had come for her, and when she panicked, she flooded the female dorms by accident, her powers exploding from the stress. She killed five students, drowning them before the assassins killed her.

A knife through the heart. That’s all they did.

All the theatrics and chaos, only to stab her in the chest.

And after they killed her, they vanished without a trace, leaving only a single note behind.

“This is why they are dangerous. Now you also mourn the loss of five. If you know any other wolves with such abilities, give them up now before you are all dead.‘

It soon became clear that only one of the five assassins that came actually went to kill the girl. The other four were back up and apparently, here to let us know that we should give up anyone else.

A violent shiver rolled through me.

I tuned back into Varra’s voice just as she continued.

“Though an unfortunate and unexpected occurrence, one we will ensure never happens again, we must push forward. For those who suffered losses, classes for the day have been canceled, and you may return home for an early weekend to gather supplies, clothing, and anything else needed for the resumption of classes on Monday.”

A murmur filtered through the crowd.

“We’re resuming classes that soon?” someone whispered behind me.

“Yes, we will resume classes on Monday,” Varra confirmed, her gaze steely. “We understand notes, research, and assignments were lost in the flood-”

“And devices!” someone shouted.

“And sentimental things!” another voice added.

“And lives!”

That one hit differently.

The voice belonged to a male student, his tone thick with grief. He must have been close to one of the victims who drowned. My heart ached for him–for all of them.

“Silence!”

The Vice Headmaster’s voice boomed across the courtyard, his dominance shutting everyone up immediately.

“We understand the losses,” he continued, his voice unrelenting. “But we are wolves! Many of you are high- ranking or come from elite families. You know the risks of our world. We are susceptible to rogue attacks and much worse any day! It is now our job to evaluate, rebuild, and prepare, so this does not happen again. We do not sit around and mope.”

He said the word ‘mope‘ with so much distaste that it made my stomach turn.

Of course.

We were wolves. We weren’t supposed to show weakness.

“We resume and rebuild immediately!” Durnham continued. “The weekend is a grace we have allowed, simply because we understand that this attack was unexpected, and most of you females have lost the resources needed to continue classes today. But make no mistake–we will continue.”

Damn, he was scary.

He stepped back in line with Varra, nodding at her as she cleared her throat.

“For those who live within thirty minutes of the academy, you will be granted pardon to commute during the reconstruction of the female dorms. The rest of you will have no choice but to share space with the males.”

A chorus of groans erupted from both sides of the courtyard.

“Oh, come on!” someone muttered.

“There’s no way that’s gonna be easy,” another grumbled.

The males didn’t want to share their space, and honestly? We didn’t want to live with them either.

Durnham stepped forward again, leveling a glare across the courtyard so intense that the complaints died immediately.

“You. Will. Share.”

Varra continued as if the outburst had never happened. “For those who have relatives on campus, you will automatically be placed with your kin.”
