Moving into Xander’s room felt strange.

His room was huge, far bigger than the one I’d been staying in, with dark walls and a private balcony that overlooked the forest. A king–sized bed sat in the center, neatly made, the deep charcoal sheets crisp and untouched. A couch was positioned in the corner, and to the left, there was a set of doors that led to what I assumed was a walk–in closet and a personal bathroom.
The entire space was unapologetically masculine, the scent of cedar and something undeniably Xander clinging to every inch of it.
The tension from last night still lingered, thick and unspoken, but Xander didn’t seem in the mood to continue whatever battle of emotions had started between us. He’d barely said a word since I started unpacking my things in the small drawer he had allotted me.
A knock sounded at the door, breaking the silence.
Xander barely glanced up from where he was sitting on the couch. “It’s open.”
The door pushed open, revealing Mona. She stepped inside, taking a glance around before arching an eyebrow at me.
“Well, this is a far cry from our dorm room.”
I let out a small laugh, relieved to see her. “You could say
that.”
Xander pushed off the couch, heading into the bathroom without a word.
Mona waited for the door to shut before her face darkened with concern.
“I’m worried about Dhara,” she said, getting straight to the point.
My stomach twisted. “Who is she staying with?”
“That pissy third–year who wanted to hunt wolves with Gifts.” Mona’s jaw tensed.
My breath caught. “You’re kidding.”
“I wish I was,”
My heart pounded with unease. That wasn’t safe. Dhara might’ve been good at keeping her identity hidden, but if that man so much as suspected anything…
“She can’t stay there,” I muttered, pacing.
“I know,” Mona sighed. “I wanted to bring her home with me, but my aunt barely tolerates me as it is. She doesn’t like strangers.”

Mona was allowed to commute since her aunt live just on the border of Emerald Pack, which was about thirty minutes from the academy.
I chewed on my lip. “Maybe I can talk to Xander-”
“No.” Mona shot me a look. “You really think he won’t get suspicious if you suddenly start asking to house another student?”
I groaned. She was right. Xander wasn’t stupid. He’d start asking questions. And the last thing we needed was for Dhara’s secret to get out.
“We’ll figure it out,” Mona promised. “We’ll rotate or something. She won’t be alone with that guy
Before I could answer, the bathroom door opened, and Xander stepped out.
Dripping wet. Shirtless.
My mouth went dry.
for long.”
His hair was still damp, droplets sliding down the hard ridges of his abs, disappearing beneath the waistband of his sweatpants. He ran a towel through his dark strands lazily, as if completely unaware of how utterly unfair he looked.
Mona hummed under her breath. Loudly.
I shot her a warning look, but she was already smirking, eyes glinting with mischief.
“Welp,” she said, dragging out the word as she stood, stretching dramatically. “I should leave you two to it.”
I flushed. “Mona-”
She wiggled her fingers at me. “Have fun, roomie.”
Then she was gone, the door shutting behind her.
Xander raised an eyebrow. “Should I expect my room to become a social club?”
I turned to face him fully, crossing my arms.
“Would it be a problem? It’s just two weeks.”
He shrugged. “Your gifted friend is welcome anytime if it makes you feel better for her safety.”
My heart lurched. I froze, my stomach twisting.
“You… you heard?” My voice came out breathless. I thought we had been talking softly.
Xander smirked, but there was something knowing in his gaze.
“I knew long before today,” he said.

Chapter 30
…
My blood ran cold. How?
“How?” I asked, but he only shrugged.
:
His casualness about it threw me off. Did he already know about special wolves?
I wanted to push, to demand answers, but my mind clung to something else instead-
He was offering her safety.
I swallowed hard.
“You’d really share your room with both me and her just to keep her safe?” I asked, my voice low.
Xander blinked, as if the answer was obvious. “Yes.”
Like it was nothing.
Like of course he would.
Something inside me melted.

Before I could think, before I could stop myself, I moved. I rushed to him, my arms wrapping around his waist, pressing my face against his bare chest.
We both stiffened.
I felt his entire body go rigid, his breath hitching. Heat radiated off of him, the warmth of his skin searing against my cheek. My fingers curled instinctively against his back, feeling the shift of muscle beneath my touch.
Then He exhaled sharply, his arms slowly–hesitantly–coming around me.
Tension coiled between us, thick and unspoken, the heat of his bare skin bleeding into mine.
His fingers pressed into my waist, his breath fanning against my hairline.
