Chapter 285
Amber’s POV
“I have a possible solution,” Rafael said. “It might offer you some peace of mind. We could leave Alice here, well protected by my guards, as well as having someone we know and trust watch her.”
This could be a reasonable plan, but there were few people I actually trusted with my child’s safety, and most of them were either hundreds of miles away or going with me into the heart of the lion’s den. Julian and Rafael both weren’t going to let me do this alone.
That meant that Rafael had someone else in mind.
“Who?” I asked.
“Mary,” he replied.
“Absolutely not,” I said at once.
Rafael sighed. “Despite your personal issues with our cousin, she does prioritize family above all else. She would make sure Alice is safe.”
I wasn’t so sure about that. “You might recall, Rafael, that Mary doesn’t believe I’m part of this family. She doubted clear evidence, and we still hadn’t heard back on those personal tests she had done.”
I had no doubt they would show as the first tests did, that I was related to Rafael by blood. That she had been quiet this whole time likely meant she had that knowledge and just didn’t want to share it. I wondered what it would take to get her to acknowledge my bloodline.
Though as long as I had Rafael’s support, I didn’t care what Mary thought.
But since she was so adamantly against me being a part of the family, I could only imagine that same belief extended to my child. I wasn’t about to leave Alice in the hands of someone like that. I didn’t want to think Mary could be cruel to a six–year–old, but I wasn’t willing to take that chance.
“I don’t trust her,” I said, and with Julian backing me up, that was the end of the suggestion.
However, Rafael’s idea did spark one of my own. Leaving Alice behind with someone we trusted was a solid plan. The problem with how Rafael presented it was that Mary was not the right person.
I looked at Julian and he looked back. “You think of something?” he asked.
“Not something. Someone,” I said. “What if we invited Anna.”
My dear friend Anna, who had stayed behind to continue to run our clinic after I started this misadventure with Julian. She was like a sister to me, Alice already loved her, and the only person I trusted more than her was Julian.
“Who is this Anna?” Rafael asked. “Is she trustworthy?”
“I would trust her with my life,” I said.
“What about with Alice’s life?” Rafael asked. “Because that is who would be at risk.”

“That too,” I said. “She’s a very dear friend.”
“We can trust her,” Julian added.

Rafael narrowed his eyes at Julian’s interjection but eventually nodded. “If you think so, I will support you, sister.”
“Then I’ll make the call.”
Taking my cell phone, I retreated to the bedroom that had become my own, the one I had lived in the last time I’d been here. Everything had been cleaned but otherwise kept how I left it. Some of my things still hung in the closet, and my knick–knacks were on the desk and the shelves.
I was comfortable here, my own little space. It was a home away from home now.
Lifting my phone, I found Anna’s contact and dialed her number. I had tried to stay in contact here and there, but with everything going on, it had been difficult. I couldn’t remember the last time I had sat down with her for a good long chat. Mostly, nowadays, we just sent quick text or voice messages.
“Amber!” Anna said as she answered. Hearing her voice flooded relief inside of me. At once, it was just as things had always been, like we hadn’t spent any time apart at all. “Tell me everything that’s happening.”
I laughed at her enthusiasm, but soon that good humor fell as the seriousness of the situation that made me call returned to my thoughts.
“Anna, I’ve got so much to say. But before any of that, I need your help.”
“Whatever it is, you know that I’m for it,” she said. “Tell me what you need me to do.”
Ten minutes later, Anna and I had a plan. She had only the basic breakdown of all that was happening, but she had already seen about my sudden rise to princess status on the news, so she could guess the kind of danger Alice and I were in.
“I’ll fly in on the red eye tomorrow,” Anna said. “I’ll be there as early as I can get.
“Thank you, Anna,” I said.

“Don’t worry about it,” she replied. “That’s what best friends do for one another.”
After my call, when I stepped out into the hall, I saw Julian instructing Alice to brush her teeth. She was already in her pajamas, getting ready for bedtime.
“Just in time,” he said, spotting me. I walked closer. “Everything go well with Anna.”
“She’ll be here in the morning,” I said.
“Great,” Julian replied. He spoke smoothly, matter–of–factly, like he had known all this time what Anna would say. Maybe she and I were predictable that way. Friends like us would never leave the other hanging if they were in need.
When Alice came out of the bathroom, teeth freshly brushed, Julian and I both went into her room to tuck her in and say goodnight.
