Chapter 286

Amelia’s POV

In the morning, I went downstairs to wait for Anna’s arrival. To my surprise, she was already there, sitting in the living room across from Rafael who was reading a newspaper. Had I overslept?

I looked at the clock. Gods, I did!

I’m sorry,I said.

No worries,Anna replied. She immediately hopped to her feet and hugged me. I guessed you might have been busy last night. As she pulled back, she waggled her eyebrows at me.

Rafael sighed behind his newspaper.

Come with me to get coffee,I said and tugged her along with me toward the kitchen.

When we were out of earshot of my brother, Anna said, So you and Julian hooked up last night, right?

I gave her a look I’d hoped would end the conversation. Instead, she just laughed.

Your shirt is on inside out.

Looking down, I realized it was. When we reached the kitchen, I stepped into the closed pantry a minute to remove and put on my shirt correctly. Stepping out again, I moved immediately to the coffee pot to pour myself

a cup.

Anna had guessed correctly of course, but to my surprise, she seemed more amused about the whole thing than judgmental, which was how I would have thought she would react.

Why aren’t I getting a lecture about how dangerous I’m being?I asked her cautiously.

Because, she said. I know this is what your heart wants. Of course, I want you to be careful. Julian has a track record of breaking your heart. But, you’ve been sending him doe eyes ever since he came back into your life. I don’t know, Amber, I think he might be the only one you really want.

She’s the only one I want,Julian said, as he walked in through the door. He joined us at the counter. I slid him the coffee cup I had just filled and poured another one for myself.

Anna looked between us. To Julian, she said, If you hurt her again, I will take it upon myself to make your life a living hell, got it?Her tone had totally shifted from when she had been talking to me. Now, with him, she was all business and serious as a heart attack.

I have no intention of ever seeing Amber hurt,Julian replied. I now see it as my personal duty to protect her heart, along with the rest of her. And Alice too.

To my surprise, Julian was just as serious, matching Anna’s tone.

They stared at each other, not with animosity really, but with something else. A mutual respect maybe, as they were seemingly coming to terms with one another.

Good,Anna said. Because she needs you.

Anna!I gasped, embarrassed.

But Anna pressed on, undeterred, And she’ll keep needing you, so you better keep being there.

I will,Julian said, and made it sound like a knight’s vow. I’m not going anywhere ever again.

While they spoke, I sipped at my coffee, but I didn’t really need it anymore. My heart was already racing.

Later, after saying goodbye to Alice and Anna, and getting into our packed cars, Rafael, Julian, a few enforcers, and me started the trek up to the ghost town. As Rafael’s pack lands were expansive, it was going to take us a few hours to get there, but leaving this early, we were set to arrive by the midafternoon, giving us enough daylight to make an assessment of the town.

Rafael had already sent some of his scouts up to check the area, but he had yet to hear back from them, something he was stressed about as he, Julian, and I sat in the back of one of the sedans.

The tension remained heightened between us, as none of us really knew what to expect going forward. We only knew that our destination was likely to be dangerous.

As things were so tense, we barely talked at all. Julian sat next to me, silently holding my hand in his. Occasionally, he would squeeze my hand, or rub his thumb along mine in a comforting gesture.

It was kind and sweet, and helped bring me some comfort in the stress.

Eventually, we reached a part of the journey where the road had washed out, not allowing for any cars to travel the rest of the way to the town. To continue, we had to go on foot.

As Rafael barked orders to his enforcers, making sure that we’d have proper protection or at least as much as we could have Julian helped me out from the car, and then whispered his own instructions to me.

Stay near me,he said. No matter what happens, I will protect you.

I didn’t use my wolf often, so she wasn’t as strong as the pair of Alphas around me or the other enforcers. Julian’s advice was sound, and I made a note to follow it. Or at least, I wanted to try to.

In the heat of the moment, sometimes my actions moved quicker than my thoughts, especially when it came to protecting the people I cared about.

Julian wanted to protect me, but I wanted to protect him too. It was difficult to think about who was stronger when push came to shove, when all I could think was that I didn’t want him to get hurt.

For now, though, I told myself to stay behind Julian, to trust him to protect both myself and him. He’d already proven he could.

We followed along the washed out path for a ways. Soon, some of Rafael’s scouts approached us.

The town is definitely occupied, one of the scouts said. It doesn’t appear to be any kind of military occupation, just regular people going about their lives.

Rogues?Rafael asked.
