She was flinching again. Maximus noticed that. She would react this way whenever he raised his voice, or even made a little aggressive gesture.
The thing was; Maximus didn’t know how to treat Rania. He didn’t know how to be gentle, when he was very fluent in violence. He didn’t have any idea what the right thing to do.
His anger was his armor, and he wouldn’t put it down for her. He had worn it like his second skin, and he didn’t know how to take it off.
However, seeing how she scared of him was disturbing.
He loved it whenever he could instill fear to his opponent, watching them trembling in horror, thinking he would rip them apart. Maximus bathed in that feeling, and he felt good.
Yet, it was different with this woman. For the first time, he didn’t want her to fear him. He wanted her to stop flinching with his touch or his words. He wanted her to look at him.
This feeling was upsetting, but he didn’t know how to control himself. It was like asking a wolf to change their fur.
“I want to go back to my bedroom,” Rania finally managed to speak, after so much difficulty. “But, I don’t know which direction should I take.”
Maximus opened the infirmary door, and he found Lula was stressed out because Rania was not there. She visibly breathed in relief when she saw the young woman behind the king.
“Heaven! I just stepped out for a while to replenish my medicine, but when I returned you were not here.” She massaged her chest, as if to calm down her beating heart.
“I am sorry to make you worry,” Rania said in a small voice. She felt bad to make her worry. She assumed, she must be the healer in this palace.
Lula than wave her hand impatiently. “Come here, lay down, I will check on you.” She glanced at the king, she hoped, she was not in any trouble. The king said nothing, but his eyes fixed on his mate.
It seemed, she was not in a great trouble, so she started to check on Rania with earnest. “She is fine. I think she only need to rest, she can return to her bedroom, but I will check her again later to make sure of it.” Lula reassured the king more than she did to her patient.
Maximus nodded, and then waved his hand to dismiss the healer. She then gladly left the room without saying anything. She moved as fast as she could.
And once it was only the two of them, Maximus approached the bed, and sat down on the edge of it. He placed his hand on her thigh, to stop her from moving away from him.
“Are you scared of me?” Maximus asked. He intended his voice to be gentle, but it sounded more like a threat, even for him, which frustrated the king.
Rania lowered her head, she didn’t dare to answer him. She didn’t think the answer would make him happy.

On the other hand, Maximus became annoyed even more, he wanted to grip her chin again, and force her to look at him, but he saw the scratch on her skin from what he did the previous afternoon, and instead he cupped her face with both of his palms, careful not to hurt her.
“I told you to look at me when I speak to you.” He tried, okay? But, his voice simply came out like a growl, and he couldn’t help it.
Rania widened her eyes. She was stiffened, but she did what he told her. She stared into her own reflection in his clear blue eyes. Now, she realized how beautiful the color was.
“Are you scared of me?”
“Yes.” The answer came as a whisper.
He had expected the answer, but still, it annoyed him. He couldn’t help, but glared at her, which in this case, only worsened the situation.
“Why?”
Rania fought so hard not to drop her eyes, because the king would be angry again, since she didn’t look at him in the eyes when he spoke. But, it was very difficult!
The king looked like he wanted to strangle her to death, but then asked why she was scared of him? How should she explain that?
Rania gulped down thickly. The king wouldn’t let go without getting the answer that he wanted.
“Because you look like, you want to kill me…” Rania finally spoke, but her voice was heavy, and hoarse, laced with dread.
“I don’t want to kill you! I wouldn’t have been alive now if I had wanted to kill you!” He roared angrily, but then realized his mistake, and then became angry at himself and the woman before him. “I will not kill you.”
That statement alone sounded like a threat, which Rania didn’t know how to react. She bit her lips in distressed, her whole body tensed up, and Maximus could feel that.
In the end, he dropped his hand, and leaned back slightly to give her some space, which Rania became visibly relax.
