Adele~
We spent two hours in town– getting my makeup and hair done– and now, I was standing in my room once more, watching as the girls eagerly grabbed my dress from the box.
"Okay, there's something more in the box," Sarah said, excitement sparking in her voice as she dug a little deeper beneath the folds of tissue paper.
I blinked, tilting my head. "More?"
"Yes!" She pulled out a small, velvet pouch and handed it to me with a mischievous grin. "Open it!"
Carefully, I untied the delicate string and opened the pouch. Inside was a diamond necklace. A thin, glimmering chain with a tiny, elegant pendant shaped like a rose. It was simple but breathtaking, like something pulled straight from a dream.
My heart squeezed. "Oh. My. God," I whispered, my fingers trembling slightly as I lifted it. "It's… it's beautiful."
"You better not cry!" Emily warned, wagging a finger at me. "We spent too long on your eyeliner."
I laughed wetly, blinking up at the ceiling to push the tears back. "Okay, okay! I won't ruin your hard work."
“Come on, put this on for me,” I stretched it to Sarah but she stepped back, her eyes filled with sparkling tears.
Sarah gulped as she stared at the dazzling, delicate necklace. She was unable to form words for a moment before she shook her head. “I– I can't touch that.”
“What?” I blinked, surprised.
She wiped her tears. “What if, what if it falls and breaks?” She finished softly. “I've never held anything so precious before. Even if you sell me and drain all my blood, I won't be able to replace it if I accidentally break it.”
Emily and I chuckled at her dramatics.
“Fine. I'll take care of the necklace, you get the dress.” Emily said, reaching for it.
Sarah nodded and walked back to the bed to get the dress.
Emily helped me fasten the necklace around my neck, and as I glanced at myself in the mirror, a strange feeling washed over me. A mixture of nervousness, excitement, and something else I couldn't quite name.
I felt... ready. Like today was the beginning of something new, something I had fought hard for.
"Alright," Emily said, stepping back and clapping her hands. "Time to get dressed."
Sarah brought the dress. Her movement was careful and reverent like she was handling something sacred. A soft smile appeared on my lips as I stepped into it, letting the fabric slide over my skin.
The glittering bodice hugged my upper body, beautifully sculpting my figure without feeling restrictive. Sarah’s nimble fingers worked the delicate spaghetti straps at the back while Emily adjusted the skirt, spreading it out so the layers of fine fabric fell in graceful, flowing waves around me.
When they finished, I turned to the mirror.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The woman staring back at me didn’t seem real… she looked like a dream spun from moonlight and lace. My hands smoothed down the front of the dress, feeling the subtle embroidery stitched into the fabric.
Emily’s voice broke the spell, warm and full of pride. "You look perfect," she said.
And for the first time in a long time, I believed her.
…
It was p.m by the time we were done. The two girls walked me to the front of the resort. I saw Mark from the corner of my eyes. He was standing by the beach, watching me.
“Hey, Mark!” Emily called out and he turned back. For a moment, I saw him stare at me a little longer than necessary before padding over.
Standing before us, he started, “You… If you can make it back tonight,” he paused, as if struggling to form words. “I'd like to take you three out to have dinner–”
“There are other days too. It doesn't have to be tonight.” Emily stared at him, there was something like subtle anger in her eyes.
My gaze shifted from one to the other, if I didn't believe it before, now, my belief that those two are in a relationship became stronger.
