Bound by Magic, Married by Fate novel Chapter 13

Chapter 13

Valerie was floored by Skyler’s shamelessness. “I told you, there’s no way I’d give Jay my kidney!”

Skyler was about to snap when she added, “I know a skilled traditional medicine practitioner who can keep him alive with medicine. If he takes it every week, his body will be strong enough to undergo surgery within a month. That should give you enough time to look for another donor.

“As long as you’re willing to pay, you’ll eventually find a match.”

In other words, she could help Jay hold out until a transplant came through, but her kidney would never be on the table.

Skyler raised his voice. “Keeping him alive with medicine? Are you kidding me? Ever since he fell ill, I’ve taken him to every hospital I could find. Only a kidney transplant can save him.”

“Don’t make such a sweeping statement just because you haven’t met the right expert,” she argued.

He held out his hand. “Fine. Give me this expert’s contact information right now.”

“You don’t expect me to help you for free, do you?” She sneered.

Skyler felt his chest tighten again. “Name your price.”

“I want half of your family’s assets.” Valerie didn’t mince her words.

He was so mad that he almost coughed up a mouthful of blood. “That’s out of the question!”

“In that case, we’re done talking.” Valerie shrugged.

“Are you messing with me right now, Valerie?”

“I wouldn’t have made that demand if I couldn’t back it up.” She pulled out a small bottle from her bag.

“This was given to me by that expert. Give it to Jay. If he isn’t out of the ICU and in a regular ward in seven days, you can forget about everything I’ve said today.”

He eyed her skeptically. “How do I know you aren’t trying to hurt him?”

Valerie slid the bottle back into her bag. “Take it or leave it.”

Skyler felt conflicted. The doctors had issued a critical condition notice and told them to prepare for the worst. At this point, even if Valerie were willing to donate her kidney, it probably wouldn’t help. He might as well take a chance and give Jay these pills.

Skyler held out his palm. “Give me the medicine.”

Without another word, Valerie tossed the bottle into his hand. “This is a week’s worth and my bargaining chip. If you want more after seven days, you’ll have to pay the same price.”

The next day marked the start of a new semester at Arcton University. As one of the most prestigious schools in Windmere, every student who managed to get into Arcton University was someone to reckon with.
