Bound By Moonlight to My Mates (by Sofange Daye) novel Chapter 17

Chapter 17

Charlotte

Cold air kisses my skin, and my eyes flutter open. As I wipe the sleep from my eyes, I see a pair of silver eyes looking down at me. A scream bursts from my lips. White paws are heavy on my shoulders, and I try to scramble away, but I can’t escape from under the wolf. I try to call Tala forward, but she is silent in my mind. It is almost as if she isn’t there anymore.

You are okay, Moonborn. The wolf speaks to me.

Please let me go,I beg. I don’t mean any harm..

The wolf cocks its head to the side and sits back, freeing me from its hold. I scoot away from the wolf and look at it carefully.

I don’t mean you any harm either,” it replies. It would be foolish to kill you.”

We are sitting in the middle of a temple. A place that I have never been before. I rub my eyes, trying to discern if this is real or not, and all the time, the wolf watches me. The temple doesn’t fade away, and I can feel the cold stones beneath my body.

I get to my feet and wander around the temple, running my fingers along the stones. The same magic that hums beneath my father’s box is in these stones, and I know they are connected somehow.

My eyes search the temple for an exit, but it appears we are encased in stone. There is no way in or out.

Is this real?I mutter as I lay my hands upon an altar.

The wolf inches away from me. Why wouldn’t it be real?

My fingers curl against the stone, and fear washes over me. How did I get here?

I called upon Tala, the wolf informs me. But you came instead.

What is this place?I ask.

The wolf jumps onto the altar and looks down on me. This is the temple of the Moonborn.

Enough,a voice interrupts us.

Another white wolf appears from the shadows, and I recognize her instantly. Tala.

Her eyes flicker to me in a moment before they return to the other wolf. You called upon us both, Conan.

Conan growls in Tala’s direction. I would never make such a mistake.

Tala ignores his outburst, but I am afraid. Just tell me why I am here?

Conan’s eyes remain on me, and his mouth curls into a snarl. Has she chosen the mate?

Tala returns his anger. She will choose one in her own time.”

Conan paws at the ground impatiently. She must choose now! There is too much at stake.”

What if I choose not to have a mate?I interrupt.

A growl rips from Conan’s muzzle, and I instantly regret my decision to speak out of turn. He advances on me and snaps his teeth inches from my face. His hot breath fans against my skin, and I swallow hard.

You don’t get to speak on this matter.”

A snarl fills the air, and Tala tackles Conan to the ground, pinning him beneath her paws. She nips at his neck, daring him to challenge her again. Do not speak to my human?

We risked everything to send you back,he roars. Perhaps we should have chosen another.

Perhaps you should have, she nips at him again. I will not force her into a union she does not want.

Conan breaks free from Tala and puts space between them. Surely there is one she is drawn to more than the others.”

The demon,” Tala laughs.

They talk about me like I am not even here. I am not drawn to any of them.”

The two wolves ignore me. What about you?Conan asks. Which one do you prefer?

Tala’s hackles raise on the back of her neck. It isn’t my choice.

Perhaps you could persuade her,he continues.

Stop talking about me as if I am not here,I scream.

Both wolves turn their heads toward me. Tala whimpers at my outburst, but Conan looks annoyed. He stands between me and my wolf. His silver eyes are riddled with concern. There is too much at stake.”

I shake my head. Why? Why must I choose?

Conan’s silver eyes begin to glow.

Moonborn child, you walk a path of breaking.

One bond torn, yet four await.

Choose, or be unchosen.

For if you stand alone, your wolf will fall to silence,

and the packs will fall to ash.

Blood shall turn to shadow,
