Chapter 18
Charlotte
“Wake up, Little Cricket.”
I groan loudly as the scent of raspberries fills my nose. “Don’t call me that.”
Theo chuckles playfully. “How are you feeling?”
My eyes flutter open, and I see his black orbs looking down at me. Normally, he wears a look of indifference when he is with me, but today he looks pleased to see me.
“It feels like I fell from the sky and landed on a bunch of bricks.”
I try to sit up, but Theo pushes me back down onto the bed. “You need your rest. You are still healing.”
Throwing an arm over my face, I wiggle my toes. My muscles ache with stiffness, but it is a welcome pain, like how it feels to stretch after taking a long nap. “What happened?”

Theo pulls my arm away from my face. His pleasant gaze is gone, and it has been replaced with one of thoughtful concern. “You tell me?”
I press my lips together in a thin line as I consider telling him what happened. “You will think I am crazy,” I finally say.
He sits on the edge of my bed, and the intensity of his gaze is turning me into a puddle. This man could do terrible things to me, and I would let him. While I stopped Damon from touching me, I don’t think I would have the strength when it comes. to Theo. He makes a desire burn within me and makes me want to show him all of me, even the dark places that I keep hidden.
Raising his hand tentatively, he swipes my hair from my face. Sparks erupt beneath my skin, and he draws in a ragged breath. His fingers linger behind my ear for a moment before he pulls them away. He looks pained at his actions but quickly wipes the look from his face.
“Try me.”
I wrinkle my nose before I start to speak. “I was called upon?”
Theo tilts his head playfully. “Is that a question?”
“No,” I shake my head. “I mean. I was called upon, or at least my wolf was…”
Theo listens carefully as I tell him what happened in the temple. His eyebrows knit together with concern when I repeat what Conan whispered to me right before I started falling. I told him about the memories I experienced as I feel, and how I believed they belonged to Tala.
His breath becomes uneven when I describe how I hit the ground and felt my bones shatter, and he squeezes my hand when tears drip down my cheeks.
As I speak to him, it is like I am reliving the pain all over again, and my body begins to ache again. Fighting through the emotions that threaten to overwhelm me, I stop crying when I reach the end of my story. I wipe the tears from my face and wait for Theo to say something.
“Can I speak to your wolf?” He whispers.
I shrug my shoulders. “I guess.”
“Tala,” he speaks her name as if he has said it many times before, but I have never heard him say it before. “What death
made
you an ancient one?”

She stirs in my mind and peers through my eyes. I can feel her looking over Theo, and her mind conflicted. It is as if she knows him.
“I fell,” her voice parts my lips. “I was pushed off a cliff. My mate no longer wanted me.”
Without any other explanation, Tala retreats into the recesses of my mind. Curling herself into a ball, she blocks her mind off from mine, and I know the conversation between her and Theo is over.
When my eyes focus back on Theo, he is already trying to leave my room.
“Wait,” I call after him. “You can’t leave. Not yet.”
He turns to me, and his eyes are impossibly dark. They are like endless pits that threaten to swallow me whole if I get too close, but I know I would be willing to take that chance. Not for any of the other mates that the Moon Goddess has thrust upon me, but for Theo, I would walk through the darkness to find him.
He runs his hands through his dark hair. “I am not the right choice.”
I swallow my disappointment. “Why?”
“I am not a savior,” he tells me. “I am a demon, or have you already forgotten?”
I force myself up in the bed. “I don’t believe you are evil, not when you look at me the way you do.”
He grumbles under his breath. “Pick another, Little Cricket.”
He disappears from the room in a flash, and I am left alone and disappointed. Tala insisted that I choose a mate, and I did, only to be rejected again. Now, I am certain that I will not choose any of the others. I need to get away from the Southpaw Pack and the men who are determined to claim me.
I wiggle my feet and then my legs, until the tightness of my muscles fades away. Swinging my legs over the edge of the hospital bed, I slowly get to my feet. No sooner do my feet hit the ground than Lucian comes bursting through the door.
“You are supposed to be in bed.”
I roll my eyes at him. “I am fine.”
Grabbing my clothes from the chair, I disappear into the bathroom, knowing he is just outside waiting for me.
“I am leaving,” I yell out to him, thinking that he will be happy to hear that.
He growls loudly. “If you leave, I will be forced to go with you.”
Stepping from the bathroom, I cross my arms over my chest. “No, you won’t.”
