Chapter 19
Charlotte
I am not surprised to see Jake waiting for me outside of the hospital. His blonde hair has gotten longer since I first met him and is now hanging down in his eyes. His cheeks flush red as I approach him, and he scratches the back of his neck awkwardly.
“I came to visit you every day.”

“I think I have spent more time in the hospital than I have in the pack house,” I try to joke, but it only deepens the frown on

“It makes my wolf nervous when you are hurt,” he mutters.
His genuine look of concern isn’t something I am used to. Or at least, it isn’t something I have seen since the death of my father. I have been taking care of myself for so long that I have forgotten what it is like to have something else worry about
“Hey,” I whisper. “I am okay. It is going to take more than a dream to kill me.”,
My words don’t seem to ease his discomfort, so I slip my hand into his, Lucian groans as if it is the most painful thing he has ever witnessed, but I am not focused on my so–called knight’s discomfort. No, I am focused on what it feels like to have my hand linked with Jake’s.
He seems to be as well, because his eyes are glued to where our hands meet, and he takes a step closer to me. Normally, I would push him away, but I need this as much as he does.
Eventually, he pulls his eyes away from me. “Can I drive you back to the pack house?”
My eyes flicker to Lucian, who has already walked away. He doesn’t seem to care what I do as long as I don’t leave the pack. “You will have to,” I say, pointing to Lucian’s car. “My ride just left.”
I expect him to smile, but the serious look on his face remains. Even after we are on the road, his mood doesn’t lighten, and it is beginning to make me self–conscious.
“Are you okay?” I break the silence.
He twists the steering wheel and swerves off the road. I hang onto the door as his car skids to a stop. Once he puts the car in park, and I am sure I won’t die, I turn to him, ready to curse his name. But the look on his face stops me.
“I found you,” he spits out. “I heard you scream, and I came to you. Your body was broken on your bed, and blood dribbled from your mouth and ears. I thought you were dead. My wolf howled for days in desperation. You may not recognize me as your mate, but I know you are mine…”
“Jake,” I stop him. “It is complicated.”
He runs a finger through his hair. “I know, but I love you.”
“Whoa,” I exclaim. “You don’t know me.”
“I do know you,” he whines. “I have been watching you since you arrived. You are smart and stubborn, but you are also kind to a fault. You are everything I thought my mate would be and more, because not only are you those things, but you are beautiful. I might not be an Alpha, or a healer, or a charming fucking rogue, but I would care for you and love you.”
I shake my head. “Jake, your status has nothing to do with any of this.”
“Then what does? What can I do to make you pick me?”

Letting out a huff of frustration, I lean back in the seat and scream into my hands. I kick my feet ha pissed off toddler, and Jake waits patiently for me to finish my tantrum. I peek through my fingers, and he is looking at me with wide eyes.
“Are you done?” He muses.
I draw in a breath. “Yes.”
Jake stares at me for a moment before putting the car back into gear and pulling back onto the road. The mood in the car seems to have shifted, and I can’t take my eyes off him. He is devilishly attractive, and I could have seen myself falling in love with him a few years ago. Before my life got complicated, and I learned I was something different.
“Did you take pictures of me when I was at Blackthorn?” I blurt out.
“What?” He chuckles. “I didn’t know you existed until I picked you up.
I purse my lips together and look out of the window. Until he had said that he was watching me, I had forgotten all about the mysterious envelope that was left for me and the pictures that were inside. It can only mean one thing. People outside of the Blackthorn Pack and the Southpaw Pack know what I am, and it makes me feel uneasy.
“Why would you ask that?” He asks.
“Someone was watching me at Blackthorn before I left,” I whisper.
“You are sleeping in my room from now on,” he announces.
