Bound By Moonlight to My Mates (by Sofange Daye) novel Chapter 28

Chapter 28

The road to Blackthorn feels longer than I remember, and with Lucian at my side, it only makes it feel longer. I had tried to leave without him, slipping out in the middle of the night, but he was waiting for me at the edge of their territory with a scowl on his face.

You’re out of your mind,he mutters, voice sharp enough to cut. Do you know how many enemies you’ve stacked up already? Southpaw bends over backwards to keep you safe, and you drag me here of all places?

He gestures wildly to the gates of the Blackthorn Pack as we approach them.

They stand before me like a bad omen, dark and black, making me regret making the decision that I made just yesterday.

Careful,I snap. Wouldn’t want your Alpha father to think his heir is scared of a rejected wolf.

His lip curls. I’m not scared. I’m just not stupid

My stomach turns as our car approaches the gates, and it doesn’t help that the sentries sneer when they see me. Well, well, well. Look who crawled back.

Lucian growls from the other side of the car before I can retort. For the first time since I met him, I am glad he is here. His presence alone is enough to make the men back off. With a low and deadly tone, he pins them with his gaze. She’s under my protection. Try me.

The shock on their faces almost makes me smile, but the feeling dies the moment we reach the pack house.

This place is full of my tormentors.

I raise my hand to knock, but the door opens before I can. Ronan is standing on the other side, eyes wide with disbelief. He steps outside, pushing me back gently. You came.

My jaw already aches from clenching my teeth. I am here to see my mother.

Lucian scoffs behind me. I get the strange feeling that he knows the real reason I am here, but when I cut my eyes at him, he averts his eyes to the ground.

Ronan looks slightly wounded, stepping back from me. Of course.”

He guides me into the pack house, placing his hand on the small of my back. The gesture both heats my skin and makes it crawl. I keep my eyes straight ahead, telling myself I don’t care about the rumors that are following me.

Wow,a familiar voice cuts through my mind. He rejected you and yet you still have the nerve to show up here.”

Ashley is standing in front of me, arms crossed with a smug look on her face. She wraps her arms around Ronan’s and rests her head on his shoulder. I don’t miss how he stiffens her touch, but it doesn’t stop the jealousy from burning in my veins.

Kill her, Tala growls.

Pushing my wolf aside, I roll my shoulders back. I am here to see my mother.”

Running a manicured finger over his bicep, she tightens her grasp. Did you hear the good news? Ronan is taking me as his chosen mate.

My teeth grind together, and I force a smile. How great for you.

Ronan shrugs her away. Your mother is through here.”

I can explain,he whispers when she is out of earshot.

You mistake my presence here for giving a shit about what you do. Now, show me to mother.”

Lucian burst into laughter behind me, and Ronan growls. He pushes a door open, and I step inside.

You can wait out here,I tell Lucian, but he pushes his way inside with me.

I am your knight,he reminds me.

My mother is crouched in the corner. Her eyes are wild, darting from Lucian to me, her hands twisting in her shirt like she’s clawing at ghosts. It burns, it burns, it burns, she sobs. Too much power. Too much truth. They’ll see. They’ll all see.

My chest caves. I drop to my knees beside her, grabbing her hands. Mom?

She jerks back, staring at me like she doesn’t know me. You were never mine, she hisses. Not truly. Not with that wolf inside you. Because of you, I couldn’t have a child with my mate. You ruined my life.

The words slice me open, making my heart bleed in a way that I didn’t think was possible.

I rise to my feet and look down on her. She rocks back and forth, muttering under her breath. Ruin and death. She can’t choose. She won’t, and the prophecy will be fulfilled.
