Chapter 29
I wait outside of her mother’s room, like a lost puppy waiting for her to return. She shouldn’t be here. She swore that she wouldn’t come back to the Blackthorn Pack, yet here she is.
I pace the hallway, telling myself to walk away, to find something better to do. But the longer I stay here, the more the bond between us keeps me waiting for her. She is my oxygen, and without her, I can’t breathe.
The moment she emerges from her mo
room, her vanilla scent consumes my lungs. My chest tightens, anger and longing tangled so tight I can’t tell where one ends and the other begins. Our eyes meet, and I smile, but it isn’t returned.
I need to get her alone, but her tag–a–log is getting in the way.

Lucian stalks beside her like a sentinel, his hand brushing against the small of her back. The sight makes my wolf snarl, claws raking at the inside of my skin. She isn’t his and yet, he treats her like she is.
Mine.
No. I shove the thought back down, even as it burns. I rejected her. That bond should’ve snapped. Should’ve left nothing but ash. And yet every step she takes toward me feels like a brand searing across my soul.
I have to tell her the truth about Ashley. How the council is breathing down my neck to choose a mate. They are trying to bury any thoughts that I might have about taking Charlotte as my mate.
“Ronan.” Her voice is steady, though her eyes flicker with defiance. She’s thinner than when I last saw her. Her body is toned, but the curves still remain. The delicious curves that have haunted my dreams for the past months. My fingers long to grip onto her, leaving marks in their wake. Claiming her, so no one will question who she belongs to.
“You said you wouldn’t come back,” I say, my tone flat, unforgiving, because if I soften even a little, I’ll break.
Her chin lifts. “I said I would think about it, and I thought about it.”
Lucian shifts beside her, protective, too damn close. “She’s under my guard until she chooses a mate. Interfere, and you answer to Southpaw.”
My lips curl back in a snarl. “And you think you can protect her from me?”
Lucian’s hand twitches, and his claws elongate. This fool is willing to start a fight with me in my own pack house, but Charlotte steps between us before the tension snaps into violence. Her eyes flash gold, and it snaps me out of my anger. “Enough. Both of you.”
For a moment, all I can see is her, the girl I turned away, the woman who came back burning with secrets I don’t understand. Her mother’s screams echo down the hall, the sound of madness and unraveling magic. The truth coils there, waiting, but 1 can’t touch it.
I drag in a breath, force myself to speak. “This pack isn’t safe for you anymore. Go back to Southpaw. To your healer. To your demon. To whatever the hell you’ve been clinging to.”
My words cut me like a knife. Just days ago, I was begging her to give me another chance, and now I am trying to turn her away. Is my elder council’s threat so serious that I am willing to let her walk out of my life again?
Her jaw tightens. “I’m not yours to command, Ronan.”
The rejection slices deeper than it should. I should welcome it. Instead, I step closer, close enough that my shadow swallows hers. I lean in close, so only she can hear my words. “You’ll always be mine, Charlotte. Whether you accept it or not.”
Her breath hitches, just once. Then she pushes past me, Lucian at her back.
“Where will you stay?” I ask.
She looks over her shoulder and rolls her eyes. “I am sure my house is still standing.”
Silence falls over the pack house. It is like pack
members are listening behind closed do everyone is waiting for my response. I would be stupid to think that i
and around corners.
Suddenly, her mother’s screams cut the air, and it breaks me from my trance. “Stay where you want. Just stay out of
my way.”
Lips pursed together, she looks me up and down. “Fine with. me.”
I let her go. Because if I don’t, I won’t be able to.
As I watch her leave, my Beta, Isaac, comes to my side. “She looks good. Better than I remember.”
I turn slowly to look at him, my eyes trailing up and down his body. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”
