Selene’s lips turned up as she heard Carla. She stood up and smoothed the creases of her skirt before speaking with a smug face, "Of course! How could she return to this place again after witnessing the truth that she had tried her best to ignore? She wouldn’t have the face."
Carla also felt the same. She was about to nod, but just then, she caught something from the corner of her eye.
She turned and peeked again. Her brows furrowed when she saw Arwen exiting the car without any trace of loss on her expression.
"She has returned," the old nanny only wanted to whisper, but somehow her voice was still quite audible.
Selene, who stood at a distance, heard her and asked, "What did you say?"
Carla turned to her with a clear bewilderment on her face. She repeated, "Ms. Selene, that woman has returned. Do you think —"
She didn’t complete, but Selene understood who she was referring to. Her brows knitted in a frown, and her fingers clenched into tight fists. She gritted, for once thinking if her plan had failed.
But when she thought back to how Arwen left last night without giving Aiden even a chance to explain, her lips again curled up in a smile.
"It’s only understandable that she had returned," she said before turning to look at Carla with a gaze full of obviousness.
However, Carla didn’t understand what she meant. Still baffled, she asked, "Ms. Selene, what are you saying? Are you saying that you —"
"No!" Selene immediately answered without even waiting for her to finish the question. "I didn’t fail. Instead, her return today is only proof of how well I have succeeded."
Carla’s brows furrowed.
And seeing her like that, Selene’s smile only deepened. She paused for a moment, lifting her lips into a smirk. "It’s only right for her to return and pack her things up. That will only solidify her departure. And only once she leaves completely without leaving her trace behind, will I be able to take her position officially."
Although what she said made sense, Carla didn’t look very convinced by it.
According to her, it would have been better if someone had packed up her things and sent them to her instead. This way, she wouldn’t have to appear again in the house.
"Let’s go and see her cleaning up. It would be satisfying," Selene said, already moving to walk out of her room.
Carla quickly walked to catch up with her.
Downstairs, Arwen finally entered the house. Aiden was following her, but maintaining a distance of a few steps —distant enough to make her feel comfortable, and close enough to keep himself reassured that she hadn’t left him.
"Madam, you are home?" Mr. Jones appeared, greeting Arwen with a smile. His gaze noted the distance between the couple. Although he didn’t like it, he refrained himself from talking about it.
Arwen had her back towards the staircase. So, when Selene came down, she didn’t see her. She just heard her voice. Her eyes remained fixed on Aiden, whose expression she could clearly see darkening —slowly but very evidently.
"What are you still doing here?" his voice was low, but it carried a clear threat underneath. "Hadn’t I made myself clear yesterday?"
Selene looked at him. Although she flinched, she didn’t show it. "Aiden, please don’t step in between me and Arwen now. This is something between us —let us deal with it."
"Selene!" The name came out in a growl.
Arwen watched him, and she could see his patience slipping. He was trying to hold it —not for Selene but for her. It was subtle, but she could see it very clearly.
"Mr. Jones," he called, and the butler at once understood.
"Understood, Sir," he affirmed and was about to move to carry out the orders.
Selene frowned and was about to speak when Arwen’s voice interrupted hers.
"Wait, Mr. Jones."
