He rubbed his eyes, still groggy. "Am I dreaming?" he murmured, his eyes still half-closed. "How could Rue be here when I just woke up? She doesn’t look too happy… but it’s a nice dream nonetheless."
"What are you muttering about?"
Ruby Grayson didn’t hesitate to flick him sharply on the forehead.
The sharp flick was surprisingly effective. It snapped Sylas Cunningham from his groggy haze into a wide-eyed stupor, but the fog in his eyes cleared, and he suddenly realized this was no dream.
"Rue? What are you doing here!" he exclaimed, scrambling to pull the blanket up to his chin.
Ruby watched his dramatic display with a deadpan expression. "Now that you're awake, try acting normal for once," she said, glaring at him.
At her words, Sylas pouted but immediately grew more subdued. He lowered the blanket, revealing a face that, despite its sickly pallor, was still finely featured. He just smiled sheepishly, looking thoroughly guilty.
"Alright, out with it," Ruby said, her tone serious. "Why would you force yourself to eat something that spicy when you know you can't handle it?"
Sylas flinched, blinking at her with an aggrieved expression. "But… you gave it to me, didn't you?"
"So if I give it to you, you'll just eat it? Don't you know your own limits?!" Hearing his excuse, Ruby's temper flared, and she slammed her hand down on the edge of the mattress.
The whole bed shook with the impact, and Sylas's face crumpled. "It's not every day you share your food with me," he whined. "How could I refuse?"
His unrepentant, self-righteous tone made Ruby see red. She was so furious she could barely speak, but finally, she managed to say through clenched teeth, "If there's a next time, you can drop dead in your hotel room alone for all I care. Got it?"
Hearing that, Sylas knew she wasn't going to berate him anymore. A playful grin spread across his face, and he started to sit up, trying to scoot closer to her. But as he straightened his back, a sharp twinge shot through his abdomen. His smile twisted into a grimace.
Ruby noticed his discomfort instantly. She slid a pillow behind him, gently pushing him back down. "Don't move!" she snapped, her eyes flashing with anger.
Sylas sucked in a sharp breath. The discomfort was still there, but his eyes were shockingly bright, practically glowing as he stared at Ruby, whose face was now only inches from his. A healthy flush returned to his cheeks.
"Okay," he whispered, a smirk playing on his lips. He was clearly enjoying this.
