Fear gripped her. She knew she was at a disadvantage with her injuries, but the sound of the alarm outside gave her a surge of confidence.
“You just wait!” she sneered, her chin held high. “Causing a scene in a hospital… you won’t get away with this!”
The matriarch stared at Gennifer’s smug, gloating face and found it utterly repulsive. She exchanged a look with Pearl. Frieda had actually said she would *like* this girl. Like what? Did liking her enough to want to smack her count?
The old woman ground her teeth, her gaze falling on a dark bruise on Gennifer’s forearm. *Some good Samaritan must have done heaven’s work,* she thought with grim satisfaction. *No wonder she’s in the hospital. Serves her right.* Outwardly, her expression was pure disdain.
Pearl appeared more composed, but her eyes were glacial, practically freezing over as they swept across Gennifer.
Apex Health Institute’s staff was indeed efficient. Within moments of the alarm sounding, three nurses rushed in.
“What is it, Miss Grayson? Are you feeling unwell?” the head nurse asked, her face a mask of professional concern. Then she saw the other two women in the room and froze. “Uh…” she stammered, cautiously taking a step back as her eyes darted between the three of them. “What’s going on here?”
Gennifer, furious, snatched a water glass from her bedside table and smashed it on the floor. “These two are here to cause trouble! Get them out of here, now!”
“We haven’t done anything. We’re just waiting for someone,” the matriarch huffed, making herself comfortable in the visitor’s chair.
Her calm demeanor put the nurses in a difficult position. The old woman looked sharp, but her hair was white with age. If they tried to physically remove her and she got hurt, they’d be in serious trouble. Besides, she wasn’t wrong. They hadn’t actually done anything. They really did seem to be just… waiting.
“Miss Grayson, do you know these women?” one of the nurses asked gently.
“No!” Gennifer shrieked, grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl and hurling it to the ground. “Get them out! My parents pay this hospital a fortune for my care! Is this how you look after me?” She didn’t know why, but these two women terrified her, and she was on the verge of a complete meltdown. She just wanted them gone.
The nurses exchanged worried glances, noticing Gennifer’s unusually volatile reaction.
“Ma’am, and you, miss,” the head nurse said, turning to them respectfully. “Our patient needs absolute quiet to recover. If you don’t know each other, I must ask you to leave.” She gestured politely toward the door.
