Chapter 86
Aurora’s P.O.V
A knock sounded at my door around nine o‘ clock at night.
Hoping that it might be Caleb coming to take me to dinner, I got up from my bed to open the door, a skip to my steps as I made my way across the room. It felt like I finally had something to look forward to after so many years of living in fear. But that tiny hope inside my chest vanished as soon as I saw wha was on the other side of the door.
Trisha, Laura, Cindy…and Mia. The devil squad were standing outside with a big bouquet of roses and wide grins on their faces. Even before I moved asde to let them in…I knew this wasn’t going to end well.
“How are you, love?” Cindy asked with fake sweetness as she handed me the bouquet of white roses. “Don’t worry, we come in peare
I kept the door open as I took the bouquet and placed it on a nearby table. Forcing a smile, I looked up at them, who were currently a foot taller than me because of their heels. “Thank you.”
“Of course!” Laura giggled. “We want to make up for our bad behaviour. After all…none of us want to be thrown out of our own pack because of an outsider.”
“Laura!” Mia gave her a scolding look before turning to me with a smile. “So sorry for that; Laura has no filter. But you’re no outsider.. at least not anymore. You’re Caleb’s mate!”
“To–be–Mate, Mia,” Cindy rolled her eyes, placing a hand on my shoulder. “You do realize that the entire pack has to accept you before you become the Luna. Not to mention that you’re human…you won’t live as long as any of us…”
All four of them gave me pitiful looks and I knew instantly that they were trying to hurt me intentionally. But even so…they weren’t entirely wrong. Maybe I was being foolish for letting their words influence me like it was doing…but now that the seeds of doubt had been planted…I couldn’t help but be curious….
“And what happens if the pack doesn’t accept me?” I asked, knowing that they were the last person I should be asking for advice or confirmation. But something told me, they’ll be honest about their answer, or at least I hoped they would be.
Caroline wanted me to be together with Caleb, so she would sugar–coat the truth to ensure that I wouldn’t get hurt…but that wouldn’t be practical. The reality was, I had no idea how a werewolf pack operated outside of the hierarchy system. They weren’t animals; they were highly intelligent, powerful beings that were far superior to humans. Normal rules had gone out the window the second Caleb had found out that I was his mate. And Caleb was now stuck with a weak, pathetic mate that would only bring him down.
“Oh! We’re so glad you asked!” Trisha and the girls exchanged looks before looking back at me. “If you’re rejected, then Caleb will be given a choice. To choose you or the pack. Then the entire responsibility will be on his shoulders. If he chooses the pack…you will be made to forget him forever. You’ll go on with your life like nothing happened and you never met him and we will never interfere in your life again. End of story.”
The words were like a blow back to reality. And they hurt more than any slap, any kick to the gut could ever have.
Caleb was the future Alpha of the pack…so no matter what choices he was given…he would always choose to be with his pack. He was born to be a wolf…an Alpha…why would he give up his birthright for a lowly human like me?
I knew then that Caroline would have told me all of this as well, but not so bluntly. She would’ve probably convinced Caleb to choose me as well…despite the oppositions from his entire pack.
“Is this because of Shane?” I dared to ask.
