The sudden roar from Gramps Hopper had frightened everyone from the Hopper Family.
Eve hurriedly glanced at Patrick and said, "Patrick, you've gotten a gift for your grandparents, haven't you? Don't be embarrassed by showing it up. I'm sure that your grandparents will like it anyway no matter what you get for them!"
Eve's implied message could not be any more clearer. She was hinting Patrick to come out with anything possible in order to resolve the conflict between him and Gramps Hopper.
However, Patrick did not seem to bother as he replied coldly, "No. You all don't need to expect anything from me."
Oh no!
Patrick's words were no different from committing suicide.
Amelia did not dare to look at Gramps Hopper's expression anymore. She was certain of a fact that she was the next one to take the blame if this were to continue.
She knew that she had to do something in order to save herself.
With such a thought in her mind, Amelia abruptly cleared her throat which successfully attracted everyone's attention onto her.
Gramps Hopper swept a glance in the direction of Amelia. Seeing that it was Patrick's wife who broke the silence, the boiling anger within his gaze intensified as he asked irritably, "Amelia, what's wrong with you?"
Amelia was aware that Gramps Hopper was on the verge of an angry outburst. Hence, she decided not to beat around the bush. She hurriedly said, "Gramps, actually I had gotten you and granny a special gift each. I was looking for an appropriate timing to give it to you. Since Owen and Nora had already handed over the gift that they had gotten for the both of you, I guess it's my turn now. I'm going to show you right away."
Hearing this, Gramps Hopper raised his eyebrows doubtfully. Apparently he did not give Amelia the benefit of doubt for what she had just said.
Granny Hopper who has always been supportive towards Amelia began to speak at this moment, "Amelia, if this is the case, hurry up and show us what you've gotten for me and your gramps. We're looking forward to it now!"
Amelia replied sweetly, "No problem, granny!"
Just as she lowered her head and was about to reach out to her handbag, Patrick whispered to her in sarcasm, "A special gift? Ha! Go ahead and boast some more! You're going to embarrass yourself!"
Amelia rolled her eyes at him before she replied to him with her voice inaudible to others but Patrick, "Don't take my kindness for granted, Patrick. If it were not for me who came in between at the right time, I'm sure that you were going to be hit by your gramps' clutch by now."
Smiling, Patrick sneered, "There's none of your business even if I really get a beating from him. Can
I understand your action of rescuing me as a sign that you care for me?"
The smile at the corner of her mouth did not reach her eyes as she said, "You're wrong! All I care about is myself! Saving you or not is none of my concern. If I continue to let you provoke gramps, I'm sure that he's going to look for my problems next. What to do when my husband on paper is someone who does not know how to resolve conflicts with his family?"
Husband in name?
So he was just her husband in name?!
Patrick's gaze darkened at her words. However, in the next second, his attention was soon attracted by the ostentatious diamond ring dangling from the middle of her chest.
Raising his eyebrows, he began to speak merrily,
"But the wedding ring that you've been carrying wherever you go seems to suggest otherwise. It does remind you at all time that what we are having now is not a mere marriage in name, doesn't it?"
D*mn it!
Upon noticing the spot that Patrick was holding his gaze at, Amelia was driven by an impulse to hide the wedding ring underneath her shirt again. However, she was deterred by the fear that such a movement would be obvious enough to attract suspicion of others.
Amelia swore to herself that she was going to remove her necklace and wedding ring altogether once she was home later.
Only both of them knew that they were having a rancorous dispute all this while. However, in the eyes of others, they were nothing but a lovely couple who had been whispering to each other.
"Had you not found anything that can be used to bluff us? I should have known that I can't be having any hope in both of you!"
It was not hard to tell the sarcasm, or what more, the disappointment in Gramps Hopper's voice. It seemed like mocking them was the only way he could make himself feel better from the overwhelming disappointment.
What was more, the rule of the game that she had explained earlier did add up with those alphabets written at the back of the checks.
Hold on a second!
Gramps Hopper felt the corner of his eyes twitching all in a sudden. It seemed like he could not tell what was on Amelia's mind either. He then asked, "Amelia, tell me honestly that who is the one that you've been praying for to get the alphabet 'K'.
"Um..."
Amelia could not help feeling that
Gramps Hopper was trying to mess around with her by asking the obvious. There was no doubt that she wanted Granny Hopper to kiss her.
However, it was not possible for Amelia to speak of her mind right away. She had always believed that the more arrogant a person was, the more sensitive he could be.
"I'm fine with either of you getting the alphabet 'K'. In fact, it's my honor to have you guys kissed me regardless if it's Gramps Hopper or Granny Hopper."
With that said, Amelia flashed a bright smile showing her teeth in front of Gramps Hopper.
If it were not for her long hair that irritated him, Gramps Hopper had to admit that he liked the way she smiled brightly.
There was no way possible that
Gramps Hopper was going to kiss his granddaughter-in-law. After all, he was still an old-fashioned man.
The truth was that he was just wanted to know Amelia's answer to his difficult question. It turned out her answer had not disappointed him.
He snorted before he said, "I don't want to play this game! Go and ask your granny to kiss you. As for another option which is hugging... Hold on! Why are you standing up with your arms wide open in front of me?!"
