"Thank you." It was not the first time that Amelia had to deal with compliments she received from people like Mr. Quade. Not only he had never meant his words, the truth was he had no regard for her achievement.
Just as she was about to reach out to the glass of juice that Audrey had specially ordered for her, one of the men that came along with Mr. Quade had taken it away from the table before she could even reach it. Subsequently, he replaced it with another glass of red wine.
"Ms. Amelia, how can you possibly toast with juice instead? Oh, come on. Make an exception for tonight and drink with Mr. Qaude!"
"That's right!"
The men on the table began taunting Amelia into drinking.
Audrey stepped in and said, "Mr. Quade, I'll drink with you!"
Mr. Quade squinted and swept a glance at Audrey before he insisted, "Ms. Atkinson, had I not made myself clear enough? I said I want to toast a drink with President Ramsay!"
Audrey made up the same excuse just as she would do for every occasion, "President Ramsay is feeling under the weather today. She's not fit to drink."
Jonathan was forced to be seated at another side of the table which was far away from them. Even so, that did not prevent him from interacting with the crowd. At this juncture, he said faintly, "Mr. Quade, it's a regret that President Ramsay can't drink much. I'm afraid that she's not the best person to drink with you. Why not you let me accompany you for a few drinks instead? I promise that I'll be with you for as many glasses as you want!"
Mr. Quade was well aware that both Jonathan and Audrey were drinkers. According to past records, whoever that attempted to intoxicate Amelia would end up getting themselves drunk by those two people!
Amelia was often being referred to as the first-class prostitute among the circle. Anyone who would like to have a taste of her must first get past Jonathan and Audrey.
The ultimate purpose of having those two people was so that she could keep other men yearning for her. Hence, she would be able to sell herself out at a much higher price. Unfortunately, everyone had learnt of her true color after the breaking news of her adultery with Sawyer.
With that thought in mind, Mr. Quade had already came up with a solution during his way there. He then said, "Since President Ramsay is unwell today, I guess today is not the day to discuss our collaboration. It'd be better for us to set up another meeting on the other day..."
Mr. Quade stood up as soon as he finished his sentence. Followingly, his underlings began to pack their things in gesture of leaving.
Amelia seemingly turned a blind eye at Audrey's widened eyes in worry. Instead, she took over the glass of wine placed in front of her before she brought the glass to drink smilingly, "Mr. Quade, you don't have to leave. Here you go. Cheers!"
Mr. Quade was triumphed at the sight of this. Amelia was no more than a prostitute in his eyes irrespective of what class she belonged to. Her compromise only convinced him that she was going to reveal her true color sooner or later.
"All right then." Mr. Quade returned to his seat unwillingly before he clinked his glass against hers.
Just as Amelia was sipping the glass of wine, she caught a glimpse of Audrey's worried look from the corner of her eyes.
The truth was, she had pondered the pros and
cons before she decided to drink. After all, it was red wine that was being served tonight. It would not pose as much harm as hard liquor did to pregnant women so long as she paid attention to the amount of her consumption.
There were always news and gossips reporting that celebrities had been drinking wine albeit their pregnancy. They were not all fools to risk harming their children. That was why they would have been cautious with the amount they drank.
"Cheers!"
"What a great spirit you have, President Ramsay!"
"Come on, let's have another glass! Cheers!"
The fact that Amelia began drinking had immediately set the atmosphere on fire!
Jonathan excused himself to the washroom halfway through their drinking session.
Consequently, Amelia and Audrey were left being surrounded by a group of drunken men. On a number of occasions, they began to misbehave with the excuse of toasting a drink at the women. Audrey was terrified at the underlying danger that surrounded them. She could not help but to stay as close to Amelia as possible.
As soon as she came close to inches away from
Amelia, a surge of fragrance began to linger in the air. Audrey could not help but wonder if it was her body odor or the fragrance of her hair.
Hold on a second!
If a woman like her was attracted by Amelia's scent, there was needless to mention about those filthy men!
"Go, now!" Amelia gave her a gentle push as she urged again.
She could tell that Audrey was already on the verge of emotional breakdown. If Audrey were to stay there any longer, Amelia bet that she was going to burst out crying at any time in face of the filthy behaviors of Mr. Quade and his underlings. In that case, Audrey would inevitably send the whole company and her into embarrassment.
Audrey refused to leave. She did not want to leave Amelia alone with the crowd. After all, they had begun to misbehave even when she was still around with Amelia. Hence, she had no idea what would happen to Amelia as soon as she was gone.
At that point, Amelia was frustrated over Audrey's stubbornness. Amelia shook her head secretly. It seemed like Audrey had not gotten her obvious message that she needed her to go and seek for
help outside.
Mr. Quade soon came to notice that Amelia was sinking at her own thoughts. At the sight of her gloomy face, he approached and asked thoughtfully, "President Ramsay, it seems like something is bothering you. Would you mind to share it with me? I'm more than willing to ease your burden."
The truth was Amelia was completely restless in perceiving the fact that he was just inches away from her. Even so, she tried to contain her discomfort and said as she smiled, "Mr. Quade, are you sure that you want to ease my burden?"
Mr. Quade nodded aggressively as he assured her, "Certainly!"
Amelia stammered, "I'm currently dealing with the problem of insufficient construction force at my site."
Apex Construction Corporation was supposed to staff with sufficient construction force. However, abundant number of the construction workers found the company untrustworthy after the collapsing incident during construction. That was why they decided to resign from working with Apex.
The number of remaining workers were far from sufficient to keep the planning project at the
Eastern district going without interruption. It was only at this point in time Amelia thought of seeking help from Mr. Quade who was an expert in gathering around construction workers.
In fact, Mr. Quade was the one who dominated the source of construction workforce in Northville. Not only did he have a massive number of construction force, they were also experienced and were able to satisfy the varying needs and demands in the market. That was why he was able to charge them at a premium price for the service he provided.
However, Amelia was in desperate need of a large quantity of construction workers at this juncture. Thus, Mr. Quade was the only one she could turn to.
Mr. Quade replied half-jokingly as he heard Amelia's word, "Speaking of the construction force, the price is negotiable. Let's not beat around the bush. If I get you on a discounted price, what can you offer me in return?"
