She remembered that she had not seen Huxton among those men who came along with Patrick.
Patrick straightened himself before he replied faintly, "He got married on the following day after you were reported missing."
Overwhelmed by surprise, Amelia could not help but raise her voice as she exclaimed, "What?! Are you saying that Huxton and Dr. Scarlett had gotten married?"
"That's right." Patrick confirmed her shock by nodding, "Scarlett's parents came up with the date they preferred all in a sudden. There was no reason for him to turn them down. I thought of asking for his help to look for you. But, as soon as I learnt that he was caught up in preparing for his wedding ceremony, I decided not to let him know of the fact that you went missing."
"In that case, this means that none of us attended their wedding ceremony." A mixed feeling of disappointment and regret flashed across her face. She promised Huxton and Scarlett before that she would make it to their wedding. There was no doubt that they were going to blame her for not keeping her words.
The concerning look of Patrick suggested that he was apologetic towards them too.
Amelia asked gloomily, "Since you had not told them the fact that I went missing, then how did you explain to them regarding our absence on their wedding?"
"I told them that you were out of town for work whereas I was caught up with an on-site survey abroad. I ordered my man to get them a yacht for honeymoon and a gold card with no spending limit imposed. Even though we couldn't be there to wish them ourselves, I wanted to send them our apology and best wishes." After all, Patrick could be extremely generous towards those people whom he deeply cared about.
Amelia nodded before her expression was replaced with melancholy in the next second. She said gloomily, "Hold on, that's not right! Now that everyone outside knows that we are divorced, it would not make sense that we got them wedding gifts together! I'm sure that you're going to arouse their suspicion!"
Moreover, there was no way on earth that she could afford to buy them a yacht or gold card!
Anyone in their sound minds would know that it was Patrick alone who got them those wedding gifts!
Amelia could not help crying out in secret, “Gosh! They must be thinking that I didn't bother to get them a wedding gift too!"
What Patrick understood from her words was that she was afraid that anyone might think that they were still in contact with each other. His expression darkened when he came to this realization.
He grabbed Amelia's shoulder and forced her to turn around and look at him. Staring at her dazzling eyes, he hushed, "Listen here. You don't have to draw a line between us!"
Amelia stunned at his words as she thought, "Is he still the same Patrick that I know of?"
Patrick that she knew of would want nothing but to keep a safe distance from her. However, the one standing right in front of her could not wait for others to think that they were still together!
"Oh Lord, you must be kidding me!"
After grumbling secretly to herself, Amelia tried to sound optimistic, "F... fine! Anyhow Huxton and Scarlett are not complete strangers to us. It doesn't matter if they know that we're still in contact with each other."
Patrick could not help frowning. Amelia had been excessively careful in making every moves. She must have been worried that any outsiders were going to subject her to gossips once they found out that she was still having contact with her ex-husband.
However, Patrick was swept away by regret whenever he thought of reason she behaved so. Meanwhile, he was also aware that his remorse was completely useless at this moment. He had to agree with Amelia that none of them were a saint in their relationship.
It was at this time that they heard someone knocking at the door.
They had to temporarily drop the conversation regarding the wedding of Huxton and Scarlett. Patrick said gently, "I'll go and answer the door."
"Okay..." Amelia subconsciously followed Patrick at the back to the door.
As soon as Patrick reached out to open the door, a man dressed in smart casual could be seen standing at the door with a stack of clothes in his hands.
At that moment, Amelia stood behind Patrick. All of a sudden, the man beamed as he greeted, "You must be Patrick's wife! I'm here to drop off your clothes!"
After closing the door behind him, Patrick handed those clothes to her. He then ordered bossily, "You don't have to know who's that man. The only man you need to know is me! And also, it's time for you to shower unless you're up to something else with me."
His last sentence immediately sent a chill down her spine. Just as she was about to carry those clothes to the bathroom, it was only then she realized something unusual, "Hold on... These clothes are mine. I used to wear them..."
It took Amelia some time before she finally noticed this. At the sight of this, Patrick chuckled, "How can you be so blur?"
Secretly, Amelia felt touched. She had to blink away her tears. She did not expect that Patrick would specially bring her clothes along when he came all the way to look for her.
"I know that you're a nostalgic person. I can no doubt buy you something better and expensive. But, I know for a fact that you're not going to like them as much as you do for your own clothes."
Time froze at that instance. Patrick hugged her from the back. He rested his lips on her shoulder as he murmured, "Mrs. Hopper, those clothes which you left on Land of Fragrance are with me still. I couldn't bear to throw any of them away. In fact, I had been putting them to wash once in a while.
You know what, I've been waiting for you to come back home..."
Neither did Amelia push him away nor had she been making any comments. It appeared to Patrick that she was not moved by his words. However, what he did not know was that her clenched fist had suggested on the contrary!
Patrick was not dejected even though she refused to give him any positive responses. After all, she did not shove him off or ask him to stay away from her this time.
That alone was a good sign to begin with!
Having the thought in mind, Patrick kissed her hair before letting go of her gently, "Go and bathe now."
When Amelia stepped foot into the bathroom, she was surprised to see that Patrick had not been moving still. He stood there with his hands crossed as he continued to stare at her.
