What was going on? That was the question that was ringing in everyone's mind.
Kaleb and the other directors were not the biggest of the problems. After all, they were familiar faces to the managers in the room. But, who were the girl and the old man?
"You're right. That girl looks familiar..." A departmental manager stared at Brittany and whispered to the rest.
Someone got the answer right away. "She doesn't just look familiar. She's the youngest daughter of Chairman Ramsay! She's Amelia's sister!"
"What?"
"But as I know, they're half-sisters..." The gossip was continuing.
Amelia did not pay attention to their comments at all. She stared blankly at the old man, Derrick, her grandfather, in front of her.
Her disfluency in calling him 'grandpa' caused Derrick to cast a glance at Amelia. There was no emotion in his eyes, which saddened Amelia a little.
Although she had not seen him for twenty years, she remembered that Derrick had hugged her when she was a child. But, everything changed after Petty committed suicide. The Simmons family no longer had any contact with the Ramsay family, and they never came to see her.
Why?
At that time, the Simmons family should have loved her more because she was their granddaughter, was that not right?
After all, Amelia had lost her mother and the Simmons family had lost their daughter.
They should have depended on each other to go through the despair, but the Simmons family was so aloof that they ignored her for twenty years.
In the past twenty years, Amelia had tried putting herself in the shoes of the Simmons family. She thought that the Simmons family hated George as well as the Ramsay family because of Petty's suicide. Also Amelia, who was George's daughter, got a share of their resentment.
The other possibility was that since the Simmons family had lost their beloved daughter, and because Amelia resembled Petty, the Simmons family distanced themselves from Amelia as they were afraid of being reminded of the tragedy.
However, this possibility was mostly selfflattering, and it could not cover up the fact that the Simmons family had ignored her for so many years. So, Amelia leaned towards the first possibility.
But no matter what, the Simmons family had always been her mother's family. To Amelia, the Simmons family was like an epitome of Petty. She wanted to get closer to them, but she could only restrain herself because of the Simmons family's attitude.
So, when she saw Derrick appeared all of a sudden, Amelia was feeling more flustered than surprised.
The Simmons family had never paid any attention to her, even when Apex Construction Corporation was on the verge of collapsing. They were also unmindful when she and Patrick had divorced. But Derrick was here, and Amelia had no idea whether was good or bad news.
Moreover, the person holding Derrick's right hand was Brittany!
How did they gather together?
Before Amelia could think about it more, Brittany's complacent gaze caught Amelia's eyes as if she was showing off to her.
Then, she looked at Kaleb. At this moment, he was leaning on an office chair and chitchatting with the directors who got along well with him, not an attitude for a meeting.
Moreover, Kaleb had come back to the office after wrapping up his overseas duty early.
With this in consideration, he should not be facing Amelia with such a carefree demeanour!
Unless they had something or someone support them!
As thoughts raced in her mind, Amelia tried to greet Derrick in a casual tone. "Grandpa, why are you here?"
Therefore, those managers hesitated again.
Although Amelia and Jonathan were their immediate supervisor, Brittany's identity was also an issue. Their former president's daughter would not play tricks on them, right?
Amelia was feeling more bizarre, but she stood tall and did not force anybody to leave.
Moreover, even if she had forced them to clear the room, with Brittany's character, Brittany would still be able to spread the news about what happened.
Amelia pulled out a chair and said to Derrick, "Grandpa, let's sit down and talk."
Derrick took a meaningful look at her. This was the first time he looked at her in the eye since he showed up.
However, his gaze did not seem like he was concerned for the young. Instead, it was as though he was looking at an unfamiliar invader.
Brittany respected him and invited, "Uncle Derrick, please take a seat. You must be tired after getting off the plane early in the morning."
"Mm," Derrick answered her shortly and sat, but not in the chair that Amelia had prepared for him.
Amelia was embarrassed for a moment, she then asked directly, "Grandpa, if you have anything to say, just say it."
Amelia knew that they must have reached an agreement in secret for Brittany to invite Derrick here.
From how Brittany tried to butter up to Derrick, it seemed that Derrick might be Brittany’s backer.
This was ridiculous. Derrick was Amelia's grandfather, but he had become Brittany's support. How could Amelia just watch this all happen before her?
