"Later, George met me on a business trip. I was the company's project manager and was responsible for dealing a business with him. We met and fell in love with each other. Finally, with Petty's consent, we went abroad to register our marriage," Alice said with a faint smile.
To take into account Amelia's feelings, Alice had told the story briefly. Then, she continued, "When Petty first heard that George and I were dating, she even went to visit me with George."
"To tell you the truth, it was too shocking for me to meet George's wife. I even suspected if there was any scheming against me behind the purpose of the visit." "However, she sincerely told me about her difficulties and that she once had a beloved man. But, because of her father, she had to end the relationship regretfully."
In an instant, everyone's gazes fell onto Derrick.
Judging from his frosty expression, Alice was telling the truth.
Alice even took the initiative to say to him, "Mr. Simmons, if I've made any misunderstanding about you, you can point it out."
Derrick shut his eyes hard and replied in a rough voice, "You're not wrong about that!"
Alice nodded, then she looked away from Derrick and continued, "That was what happened. Petty had someone she loved, but her parents ordered her to cut off all ties with him. She was too forbearing and kind. The responsibility was obviously not hers to bear, but she had always claimed that she was a disgrace for failing to meet her parents' expectations and trust. I have to say, Mr. Simmons's brainwashing skills are commendable, which was the only reason why Petty could even think that way."
Derrick glowered at her. "Don't tell me how to parent my daughter!"
Alice sneered. Her next words were like a thunderbolt lashing upon Derrick. "Did you know that she had depression?"
Derrick's rage froze on his face, and he muttered with a strange voice, "What did you say?"
"I said, Petty had depression!" Alice's eyes reddened once again. "The illness was diagnosed ever since she married George, but it wasn't obvious at that time. A cup of milk or a good bath helped her to go to sleep at night, so nobody noticed it."
"It was not until you urged her to get pregnant, or the people around her started to doubt that she and George were in a rocky relationship when she felt more stressed out. She had to resort to taking sleeping pills to get some sleep, and that was the time George began to tackle her illness."
"However, her condition had greatly improved after Amelia was adopted. She had never taken sleeping pills after that, until..."
"Until the scandal between you and George was exposed, which caused Petty to feel ashamed that she decided to commit suicide!"
Derrick interrupted, his voice firm and loud as if the truth was what he said.
However, Alice shook her head. "Mr. Simmons, Petty agreed for me to be with George, so why would she commit suicide because of a news report? The real reason for her suicide lies with I¹¹ you!
"You're slinging mud at me!" Derrick scolded loudly.
Alice stared at Derrick in his eyes. "In that case, I'll ask you to recall carefully. When the news report came out, weren't you the first to excoriate her?
"You had even said in front of her that it was her fault for losing her husband's loyalty. You asked her to find the blame for his affair on herself!"
Derrick turned livid. He started to believe that Petty and Alice were friends. Otherwise, Alice would not know about such a private conversation.
On the other hand, Amelia was holding tight onto the arms of the sofa in case she lost her strength and slipped down.
Her face was already wet with tears, and Patrick was wiping her face with a tissue.
"Mrs. Hopper..."
Amelia buried her face in Patrick's arm when she heard him calling out for her. She sobbed sadly, "My heart hurts... my heart hurts for my mom!"
Patrick's heart panged when he heard Amelia's cry. He wanted to cover her ears and stop her from listening more.
But, the memories continued. The truth that had been buried for twenty years had an undeniable effect once it broke out.
"Although Petty had always been receiving treatment, her mental state was still worsening. And though she behaved regularly in public, only me and Geroge knew that what kind of pressure she was enduring."
"During that period, George found that she had harmed herself with her fingernails, so I suggested cutting them short. Then, George found that she had hidden a hemp rope under her bed, so I suggested taking it away. But, what we didn't expect was that one day she would leave us with such a resolute method..."
Tears were brimming in Alice's eyes when she spoke. She took a deep breath, but she still burst into tears. She could not go on anymore.
