At this moment, Derrick, Amelia, and Patrick all sat in silence. Nobody urged Alice to continue.
Alice finally calmed down after covering her face and crying for a moment. She managed intermittently, "One day, George called me and said that Petty had committed suicide. It was with a fruit knife."
"At that time, he was still at work in the company. When he received the servant's call, she had already lost consciousness after too much blood loss."
"He quickly ordered someone to send her to the hospital. He rushed to the hospital then, but it was too late. When he arrived, Petty was already... long gone."
Although Petty had passed away, Amelia and Derrick both showed distressed expressions when they heard about it.
"This matter became the eternal pain in George's heart. He always blamed himself, saying that if he could spend more time with Petty, such an incident wouldn't have happened."
"It was easier said than done. Depression was an illness that could make a patient get caught up in a pessimistic mood at any time. In these special circumstances, they need supervision and be taken care of for all hours of the day." "Unfortunately, in the eyes of the outsiders, Petty was just like any other ordinary person. Naturally, the servants had times when they could not take good care of her. Furthermore, Geroge was snowed under with work."
"Petty's suicide could be successful because it was inevitable!"
After Alice wiped her tears away, she sadly said to Amelia and Derrick, "Amelia, Mr. Simmons, because George and I don't want to hurt anyone, we kept Petty's matter as a secret. Now that the truth has come under the light, I can only tell you the truth. I offer my deepest condolences... Amelia and Mr. Simmons."
How?
How could this be?
Amelia's tears were rolling down her cheeks. At this moment, she hated herself for her insensibility. Since George married Alice, she had been against them and claimed that they were the murderers who killed Petty. However, she did not know that they had been carrying this secret all these years!
"It's impossible. That's impossible..." After a moment of silence, Derrick suddenly stood up from the sofa, mumbling, and stumbled toward the door. Soon after, he disappeared behind the door. It seemed that he was avoiding reality.
As soon as Derrick walked away, Alice resumed back her tender self which was who Amelia was familiar with. "Amelia, I'm so sorry..."
"Aunt Alice!" Amelia rushed to Alice in a couple of steps and hugged her!
Alice was caught off guard, feeling a different kind of warmth from Amelia.
"You don't have to apologize! It's been my fault all this time. I shouldn't have acted up in front of Dad, and I shouldn't have always jeered at you. It's all my fault. You can scold me or hit me! I'm a horrible child!" Amelia wrapped her arms around Alice's neck and began to wail.
Alice was also in tears. On one hand, what happened had triggered her memory about her good old friend. On the other hand, she was sorry that Amelia had to learn the truth under such circumstances.
In a way, from this point onwards, not only had Amelia lost her mother, but she had also lost her father.
Alice patted the back of Amelia's head and comforted her. "Amelia, it's not your fault. In that kind of situation, anyone would've reacted as you had. It has been so many years, but have I or your father ever scolded you? No, because we fully understand how you feel!"
"But... but... don't you hate me?" Amelia could not stop sobbing.
Alice answered from the bottom of her heart, "You are your father and mother's most beloved daughter. One of them is my lover and the other is my friend. I love you so much, so why would I care about this?
"Through all these years, although you've often bickered with me, you didn't cause me any physical harm. My beloved Amelia, you're just like your mother, kind and forbearing. You even have her brows and her eyes, tender but determined."
"What's wrong with that old man? We've agreed to remove Amelia from the position of the acting director!" Kaleb muttered gloomily.
Brittany pursed her lips and said, "How would I know? I guess he must have been irritated or agitated! Or he's senile! If I had known that he was so useless, I would not have invited him here. What should we do now?"
Kaleb thought for a moment. "Brittany, I think what you said is quite reasonable."
"What did I say?" Brittany was just throwing a tantrum, so she was taken aback when Kaleb agreed with her.
Kaleb said, "You said that old man was agitated, and I think your words hit the nail on its head. Think about it! Your mother is exposing what happened twenty years ago, so it must involve that old man's daughter, Petty.
"Maybe he's brooding in his sadness now. Let him stay in the hotel alone for these two days. Then, we can contact him and weigh out the pros and cons with him. After that, we can decide our next step."
Brittany stamped her foot and lost her temper on Kaleb. "But, I can't wait that long!"
Kaleb crossed his legs and said, "Even if you can't wait, you have to. Haste makes waste."
Brittany cast a strange look at Kaleb. "Aren't you afraid that Amelia will come up with some troublesome ideas?"
After all, Kaleb was much more impatient than Brittany, especially on the matter of forcing Amelia to step down from being the acting director. Regardless of anything, he was the biggest beneficiary of her downfall!
So how could Brittany not be surprised when she saw him reacting so calmly?
