Maryanne said mockingly after being shocked, "Milton, aren't you done playing with my feelings? What do you want me to do for you to stop?"
As Milton looked at her reddened eyes, he sighed, "I thought I could mess you around and hurt you without taking on any psychological burden myself, but I can't. Not only that, I also..."
"There you go again!" Maryanne interrupted sadly. "Are you trying to tell me that you've started to take me seriously? Forget it. I would've believed you back when I was kidnapped. Every confession you've made to me is an entrapment. I was willing to play along with you then. But now, I don't want to do that anymore. You can save your sweet, deceptive words to yourself!"
Maryanne averted her glassy eyes and turned away as she spoke to avoid embarrassment.
"What if I tell you that I'm serious this time?" Milton replied with seriousness.
Maryanne bit her lower lip forcefully to suppress the tremor before she said, "Ha. Are you trying to get me back because I'm the one who dumped you first? You didn't get the pleasure of revenge, so you're trying to get me back now? You want to dump me again, is that it?"
Milton seemed to have suffered a blow and replied, agitated, "Maryanne, please don't think that way. I'm not that despicable!"
Maryanne quickly swivelled around when she saw the sadness in Milton's eyes. After wiping away the tears from her eyes, she turned back and returned, "For the sake of Amelia, you endured being in a relationship with a woman you hate for so long. So what else is there that you can't do?"
Milton wanted to shout to Maryanne when he heard the sarcasm in her words, "It's not that way!"
But that was the truth. Milton thought he was witty and set up a trap but did not notice that he had also fallen into it. What could he do at this moment?
Should he be resentful for Patrick's tricks, or should he despise himself for having feelings for Maryanne even though he knew he should not?
"Maryanne, I have real feelings for you." In the end, he only managed to utter such a reply with a pale face.
Maryanne's heart missed a beat, but she soon came to her senses. "What do you like about me?"
If she had remembered correctly, his impression of her had always been that of a willful and unreasonable b*tch.
And when compared to Amelia, who was his muse, Maryanne appeared even worse than a fly on the wall.
But Milton only stared at Maryanne and responded earnestly, "First of all, you're fashionable and born in a noble family. Secondly, although you hurt people, you know how to correct your mistakes. Besides, although your academic performance isn't great, you have other special skills. Your cooking skills aren't well, but I don't hate the way you depend on me. And even though you throw tantrums to me from time to time, it's never a big deal..."
He went on, and each beginning of his sentence elicited self- loathing in Maryanne. However, the turn in the rest of his statements made her smile again. It turned out that Maryanne was not as bad in his eyes as she had imagined.
Milton then continued, "Maryanne, I don't even remember what I've said or done to you that was sincere or insincere. I couldn't bear the torment in my heart and wanted to end this deformed love several times."
"But I didn't break us off. I don't know if it's because I haven't achieved the purpose of your punishment, or if I just don't want to leave you. Later on, I found that, ever since you accompanied me in the UK, I could deal with any of Amelia's news calmly whenever I received it."
Maryanne desperately told herself that she could not believe anything that Milton said. Otherwise, another catastrophe would be awaiting her.
"Milton, look at my hands." Maryanne then gently raised her hands and approached Milton. "It's impossible for my hands to return to their original state, just like the feelings between us. The scars on my hands will always remind us of my mistake and the person you loved. You can't forgive me, and I don't think you actually like me. You've just gotten used to my company, like the way you'll feel with a pet. You can feel this way with any dogs or cats too..."
After a slight pause, Maryanne looked intently at Milton. She loved him a lot. If she was not hurt that severely, she would not have chosen to let him go. "Milton, do you know why I said to break up with you that day?"
"Why?"
"That's because of your speculation that I still had feelings for Patrick." Maryanne continued, "You know he was the reason behind my scars and our relationship. I'm terrified of him, so how can I have any feelings for him? Weren't you just trying to humiliate me? I can tolerate everything else, but not when it comes to Patrick Hopper. He's the reason I'm this way today. I hate him! Do you understand me?"
As Maryanne spoke, Milton felt as if his heart was split into two with one part singed and the other frozen. He wanted to hug her, but she pushed him away.
As Milton watched her tears, he hurriedly replied, "Maryanne, I asked that about Patrick that day because I wanted to give us a chance."
Under Maryanne's sluggish stare, Milton continued, "When I saw how afraid you were of Patrick, I thought about whether I could lead you to tell the truth. If you were willing to tell me that you pushed Amelia down the stairs, then I could also end my revenge on you."
Initially, Milton had looked forward to making the break up quick for their own sake. However, he did not expect to feel like his world had fallen apart when Maryanne suggested cutting ties with him.
Maryanne then questioned, "Tell me. If I was willing to tell you the truth that day, you would've ended your revenge on me. Is that right?"
"Yes."
"So, isn't breaking up what you intended to happen?"
"That's not what I meant, Maryanne!" Milton expressed, "I want to start a new beginning with you."
Maryanne was stunned. Milton had always been a gentleman, so did he really say that?
"Milton Cook! You b*stard! Let go of her! Do you think you deserve Maryanne?" Hobart screamed furiously from the side.
He wanted to beat Miton up, but Milton was holding onto Maryanne too tightly that Hobart was afraid that he would hit Maryanne if he missed. So, he could only watch everything happen.
"Hobart Smith! Don't intervene! This is between me and Maryanne!" Milton retorted.
"Didn't you say you were going to break up with her? Explain what you're doing now!" Hobart accused in a fit of rage.
Milton sneered. "If I hadn't said that, would you have let me in to see Maryanne?"
Hobart was taken aback for a pause before he yelled in rage, "You shameless tw*t!"
"Enough!" Maryanne, who was in the middle of Hobart and Milton, covered her ears and shut her eyes. She yelled, "Get out of my room! Get out!"
Milton's eyes darkened at that. "Maryanne, I won't give up."
With that, he let go of Maryanne and turned to leave the room.
"Maryanne!" Hobart rushed forward to hold Maryanne's shoulders and repeatedly said, "Sorry for being late..."
Maryanne slowly lowered her arms. She then opened her watery eyes and asked helplessly, "Hobart, what should I do?"
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have let that sc*m in!"
Hobart wanted to punch himself in the face. He had allowed Milton in to make it clear to Maryanne that they should never interact with each other again. But who would have known that Milton would confess his feelings for Maryanne and even forced her into a kiss? Maryanne had never given up on him in the first place, so what if she was moved again after this?
As a matter of fact, Hobart's worry was reasonable. After a while, he heard Maryanne say, "Hobart, he said he has feelings for me! He also said he wants to have a new start with me. Do you know that I wanted to agree with him? But I'm afraid that this is another lure, and I can't afford to go through this again..."
"Maryanne, since you knew that, then keep your heart in check. In the future, I'll keep a close eye on your happiness and never let you get hurt again!"
