When Dan walked out of Blacktower and heard the news, his face went dark as thunder.

Carroll muttered, “Mr. Schultz is just awful. I mean, Ms. Quinn used to—”

“Shut up.”

If Carroll hadn’t brought up Yvonne’s old feelings for him, Dan might have held it together. But as soon as someone mentioned the past, he got that look—annoyed, bitter.

That one hurt even more.

Xander didn’t stop. “That dump of a Black Gate—after all these years running the show, you’re still a nobody.”

Dan was practically hyperventilating from rage.

Xander grinned. “Yep. I’m also Yvonne’s husband.”

Yvonne: “…”

Was he for real?

Dan snapped, “Then take her and get out. Get out of Litamark and stay out!”

He practically barked the words into the phone.

Xander replied, “You drugged her, and now you want me to leave? What kind of man would that make me?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means, unless you hand over Susanna, this thing with Black Gate isn’t over. If you don’t want even more chaos, Dan, you’d better give us Susanna.”
