Yvonne asking him for people? Whatever.
In her eyes, he was always the villain anyway, so of course, every shady thing was pinned on him.
When someone’s got a grudge that deep, having no common sense is just… normal.
But Xander? Was he brainless too?
Dan was so pissed he could practically feel his chest catching fire.
“Enough of your crap! I didn’t take her!”
He glared at Xander, voice rising.
“What’s your deal, man? Are you even a real man? I haven’t even cleared my name from last time, and now you’re letting Yvonne blame me for Susanna too!”
The more Dan talked, the angrier he got.
Especially remembering the last time—he and a few of his buddies got cornered and jumped by Yvonne and her crew.
That fiasco? Don’t even mention it.
Getting beat up for something so stupid? Dan was already fuming.
Worse yet, he’d taken the fall for Xander. He still hadn’t gotten over it.
And now Xander had the nerve to act like he was the victim?
Dan’s breathing was ragged.
“I don’t have time for your drama. Get lost. All of you.”
He was harsh with Derek, sure, but Black Gate…
That was still his late mother’s legacy, her dying wish. He’d never destroy it.
He was the one in charge of Black Gate, always had been, always would be.
Xander’s voice was cold.
“Hand over Susanna and we’ll be out of your hair.”
Clearly, Xander was convinced someone from the Murray family had taken Susanna.
If not Dan, then Derek or Finch.
Hull… best not to mess with him.
“If you stole her, just give her back. We can work this out,” Xander grumbled.
Dan snapped, “I didn’t take her!”
For crying out loud, was there no justice here? He was about to explode.
Xander shot back,
“Then go ask your old man and your brother.”
Dan was speechless.
“What’s with you? Is that how you treat your mother?”
Dan raised an icy eyebrow.
“If you’re here to talk about ‘respect,’ then maybe—”
He didn’t get to finish.
Adelle cut in gently,
“Alright, alright, don’t fight with the boy.”
She was in her fifties, but thanks to impeccable self-care, she looked barely over thirty.
No wonder Derek had been bewitched by her all these years.
Adelle soothed Derek’s temper.
“I’ll give you two a moment. Try to talk, not yell.”
She smiled warmly and tugged Derek’s sleeve before leaving.
But under that gentle face, Dan remembered the day he saw her—
Digging up his mother’s grave, spreading powdered lime in a circle, her face twisted with malice.
She might look charming, but she was superstitious and cruel.
His mother’s life had been miserable, and even in death, Adelle hadn’t let her rest.
