Dead at Heart (Ariel and Jayson) novel Chapter 706

Jayson carried Ariel in his arms and left through one of the side entrances.

Sweat glistened on his forehead, and the corners of his eyes were red.

Once inside the car, Jayson held Ariel tightly. The fear of losing her overwhelmed him. He rested his chin on her head, his trembling hand stroking her back. In a low, broken voice, he murmured, "You'll be fine… The doctors will cure you… I'm sorry. It's all my fault…"

Arthur dared not say a word. After receiving Jayson's instructions on which hospital to head to, he slammed on the accelerator and sped away.

Ariel couldn't understand why the pain was so much worse this time. It was so unbearable that all she wanted was to curl into a ball.

She could hear Jayson's despair in every word. She parted her lips, but no sound came out. All she could do was bite down hard and shut her eyes.

"Hurry!" Jayson barked, his voice hoarse with anxiety. His heart clenched when he noticed Ariel biting her lip until it bled.

Quickly, he slid his hand against her mouth, pried her lips open, and let her bite down on his hand instead.

Drifting in and out of consciousness, Ariel opened her eyes. She saw Jayson lowering his head, those usually clear, emotionless eyes clouded with unbearable torment.

His lashes were wet. A teardrop slid down and landed on her cheek.

Ariel's heart skipped a beat, and a bitter feeling welled within her. Had she imagined it? Someone like Jayson—she thought—would never shed tears over something like this.

But the pain she had endured alone all this time surged back, raw and unrelenting. Overwhelmed, she bit down hard on his hand, so much so that she tasted blood.

Still, Jayson didn't pull away. He only held her tighter, his frantic heartbeat pounding against her.

Suddenly, her storm of emotions ebbed away. She stopped biting down on his hand.

Ariel closed her eyes and said nothing for the rest of the trip.

At last, they reached the hospital.
