The next day, Michael woke up, rubbed his eyes, and asked Teresa, “Mommy, did Mr. Lime come back? I had a dream about him last night. Michael yawned.

“Really? I don’t know if he’ll come back or not,” Teresa replied expressionlessly.

Michael arched his little eyebrows as he got dressed. “Is Mr. Lime still in Jarisburg? Maybe I should give him a call and ask why he hasn’t come back yet.”

Teresa said, “He’s probably swamped with work. Let’s not bother him right now. Are you hungry? I don’t feel like cooking today. How about we go out to eat?”

“Sure!” Michael replied.

The two of them headed out to a nearby restaurant to get something to eat. Then, Teresa’s phone rang. It was her secretary, asking her to come to the office immediately–something urgent had come up.

Teresa said okay. For some reason, she couldn’t shake off a bad feeling about this.

Michael heard the voice on the other end of the line and asked, “Mommy, are you going to the office?”

“Yeah. How about I bring you along?” Teresa suggested.

Michael shook his head. “Mommy, you should go home and rest. I’ll go to the office and do your work for you!”

Teresa couldn’t help but laugh. “Seriously? What can you do? Be the doorman there?”

Michael patted his chest, full of confidence. “I can go to meetings for you!”

Teresa reached out and measured his height with her hand. “Are you even as tall as the table? If you sit down, will anyone even see you, Mr. Johnston?”

Michael puffed out his cheeks. “Humph! Mommy, you can’t tease me about my height! When I grow up, I’ll be as tall as Mr. Lime.”

Teresa paused, and for a split second, Jonathan’s tall figure and the handsome, brooding look he wore last night flashed through her mind.

“Alright,” Teresa said, dropping the banter. Then she headed off to the office.

“Teresa, here you are!” Miriam was already at the office, and her face looked sullen.

Teresa asked the secretary to take Michael out to play. Only then did Miriam speak to Teresa, “Something big happened. This morning, all the projects that were supposed to partner with our company suddenly pulled out!”

“What?” Teresa was stunned. “How could this happen?”

Miriam stomped her feet in frustration. “I have no idea either! I’ve already called all those partner companies, but none of them are picking up. It’s like they’re all trying to distance themselves from us on purpose. Someone’s definitely targeting us!”

Just as Miriam finished speaking, someone from the project department knocked on the door and came in, saying that a 600–thousand–dollar deal just fell through.

The deal they’d settled just yesterday was supposed to be signed today, but the other side’s leader suddenly backed out and handed the project over to a competitor. This was a heavy blow to Teresouth Group.

“I see. You can go now,” Teresa said with a frown. Teresouth Group was never a big player. Their growth had always been slow, but nothing like this had

ever happened before.

Overnight, all their partners had pulled out. The company’s finances were on the verge of collapse. All of a sudden, Teresa remembered the look on Irene’s face and those words she’d spat out, “Teresa, you’ll pay for this!”
