“A man claiming to be her husband came to me and said she tried to kill herself, but they managed to save her You didn’t know about this?” Peggy pressed.

Evelyn’s lips trembled. She thought, I know nothing about it! But Teresa clearly told me that Donald was taking Jennifer on a trip!

Evelyn let out a long breath. “Are you satisfied now? Just stay in there and pay for what you’ve done. You’ve turned into your own mother, being so cruel to your daughter. Is it only when Hannah becomes another you that you’ll finally be happy?!”

Those words sent waves crashing through Peggy’s heart. She had become the woman she despised most in the world.

Just like her mother, she valued sons over daughters and was cruel to her own daughter. It was like a vicious circle–an invisible bullet piercing straight through Peggy’s heart.

“Wait a minute!” Peggy suddenly called out to Evelyn as Evelyn was about to leave.

She said, “They took all my personal assets, but I still have some jewelry and valuables left. Please, sell them for me and give all the money to Hannah as compensation from me. And… tell her I’m sorry. Tell her I truly am sorry!”

Evelyn turned away with difficulty and left. After leaving the police station, Evelyn gave Teresa a call on her way back to the hospital.

Teresa had spent the whole day running between banks for business meetings, not caring at all that she was still pregnant. She had just gotten back to the office when she picked up the phone. “Hey, Mom?”

Evelyn said, “Teresa, I have some good news. Lucas is finally awake!”

“Really?” Teresa’s expression finally relaxed. After such a long, exhausting day, she finally heard some good news.

She asked, “When did he wake up?”

Evelyn said, “He woke up this morning. Jonathan’s been looking after him non–stop.”

Teresa fell silent for a few seconds. “Really…”

“By the way,” Evelyn pressed. “What happened to Hannah? Did she really try to kill herself?”

“Where did you hear that?” Teresa asked. She thought, ‘Didn’t I tell everyone to keep this a secret?” “Was it Jonathan who told you?”

“No, it wasn’t Jonathan. I went to see Peggy today, and she told me. So, how’s Hannah doing now?” Evelyn pressed.

Teresa paused for a couple of seconds. Even though she was exhausted, she still patiently explained to Evelyn that Jennifer had only tried to kill herself because she found out Peggy was her real mother and just couldn’t accept it at first.

“Don’t worry, she’s okay now. She promised me she wouldn’t do anything like that again,” Teresa reassured Evelyn.

Evelyn sighed and complained, “How could you keep something this big from me? And how did Hannah even find out that Peggy was her mother? She must be really upset.”

Teresa’s eyes turned moist. “I only kept it from you because I didn’t want you to worry. All you care about is whether she’s upset or not, but what about me? I was also-” She wanted to say that she was also quite upset today.

“What’s wrong with you?” Evelyn finally asked.

“Forget it, it’s nothing,” Teresa sniffed. She thought, ‘What’s the point of telling Mom? She can’t help, anyway, and it’ll just make her worry..
