Teresa couldn’t just sit back and do nothing. “Is he not coming back today? How long is the interrogation going to take?” Benny glanced at his watch. It was already six in the evening. “They’re still questioning a few higher–ups from Jonathan’s company. It’ll probably go on until tomorrow. If things go smoothly, he could be released then.”
He didn’t say anything about what might happen if things went south. Teresa had never felt time drag on so painfully. She asked Benny if she could take the blame for Jonathan herself.
Benny looked puzzled. “What do you mean? I don’t really get it.”
Teresa knew pregnant women usually avoid jail. She thought she could say she didn’t understand commercial operations and used Jonathan’s computer for improper actions, claiming Jonathan was unaware and she was taking the blame for him.
“Would that work? If they investigate me, Jonathan could get off the hook,” she said.
Benny suddenly chuckled, rubbing his chin. “Honestly, that’s a pretty solid plan. Beauty saves the hero. If Jonathan heard you say that, he’d probably be touched to death.”
Teresa nodded. “Then take me to the police station.”
If it meant Jonathan could be safe, she didn’t care about the company. She could take the fall for him. She was dead serious.
Benny let out a helpless sigh. “I was just kidding. Relax, things aren’t nearly as bad as you think. If Jonathan really needed to hide behind you to fix his problems, he might as well give up being the CEO of Horizonlead Group.”
But there was no way Teresa could just stand by and watch. She was determined to do whatever she could. She still wanted to give her plan a shot.
Benny’s phone rang. “Alright, I understand.”
He turned to Teresa. “I’m heading over to Jonathan’s company now. I’ll let you know if anything comes up. Seriously, don’t stress. Make sure you eat and get some rest, alright?” Benny left.
Meanwhile, at the police station, Donald had planned to plead with Irene, but by the time he got there, she was already
gone.
Jennifer was being held in custody, not just waiting in the lobby like last time. It took a lot of pulling strings, but Donald finally managed to see her.
Jennifer kept her head down, not looking at Donald. Her face was expressionless as she said, “Our divorce papers will be ready this week. You can pick them up and give one to me. From then on, we never have to see each other again.”
“Jennifer, how am I supposed to go through with the divorce when you’re like this?” Donald said, his voice tight with
emotion.
Her eyes suddenly turned red. Tears burned at the corners of her eyes. “I brought this on myself. I deserve to pay for my mistakes. I can’t just pretend nothing ever happened. I’ve come to terms with it now,” she said.
She said, “We still have to get divorced, no matter what. If you secretly try to withdraw the divorce application behind my back, I won’t agree to it. I hope you’ll respect my wishes.”
“That’s not important right now. I won’t let anything happen to you,” Donald said, tears sliding down his cheeks. “I’m going to find Irene.”
“Donald, come back,” Jennifer shouted.

Seeing him turn to leave, she yelled, “If you go begging that old witch again, I’ll hate you for the rest of my life. Don’t take away the last shred of dignity I have left.”
Donald stopped abruptly. “What do you want me to do? Are you going to jail? You could get three years. At thirty, how will you manage after jail? I can’t just watch this happen.”
‘Damn it, I’m so useless. I can’t do a thing to help her, he thought. Donald clenched his fists, hating himself in that moment.
Jennifer gave a faint, bitter smile. “Donald, thank you. I lost our baby. I don’t deserve you treating me so well. Let’s just leave
it at that.”
The miscarried child was always a thorn in Donald’s heart, causing him immense pain. But he couldn’t bear to watch. Jennifer be sentenced and sent to jail.
“Don’t worry, I’ll go talk to Irene myself. I’ll tell her it was all my doing, that I pushed you into it. It’s all on me. If someone has to go to jail, let it be me instead of you,” he said, his voice resolute.
“Donald,” Jennifer called after him, but he was already gone.
Werner had also seen the news. Luckily, he caught it before Hayden did, and to avoid upsetting the old man, he made sure Hayden didn’t touch his phone at all today.
Werner tried to get in touch with Donald first, but when he couldn’t reach him, he ended up calling Gary. “Gary, what’s going on with Jonathan? I haven’t dared let your grandfather know anything yet,” Werner said.
“It’s nothing. Just leave it alone,” Gary replied coolly. He’d never had much to say to this so–called father of his, and barely kept in contact.
He’d been tailing Irene, but while he was distracted on the phone, she took the chance to drive off. Luckily, Gary was quick on the uptake. He made a beeline for the Department of Justice, and sure enough, that’s where he found her.
Irene was desperate to see Jonathan, loudly insisting to the staff that there was no way Jonathan would ever do something like that. If there was any crime, someone must have put him up to it.
“Can you not lose it here?” Gary cut in, dragging Irene away.
“Jonathan hasn’t even been convicted yet, and you’re already talking about him being set up. Irene, are you even thinking straight? If you’re sick, let’s just go home, okay? Don’t embarrass yourself here,” he said.
But Irene refused to budge. Gary put his hands on his hips. “Alright then, I’ll just say it right here. Hey, everyone, look over
here.
