Worried that he’d stress over the hospital bills, Emmy quickly said, “Don’t worry about the cost. I’ll cover everything. Just focus on getting better, okay?”
He caught her bright, hopeful gaze and hesitated. After a moment, his Adam’s apple moved and he finally murmured, “Alright.”
Relief washed over Emmy’s face. She broke into a smile. “I should go give my statement before my mom starts panicking.”
“I’ll go with you,” he replied.
Once they finished with the police, the two of them headed over to visit Teresa.
As soon as they stepped into the hospital room, James reached for her hand without a second thought and laced his fingers tightly with hers.
Teresa had just finished her IV drip. She looked up and saw their hands joined together, and all the worry in her eyes melted away. It was like she could finally let out a breath.
“Seeing you both safe—it’s all I need. Now I can rest easy,” she said, her voice full of warmth.
The next day, Emmy got a call from the police.
“Ms. Lincoln, your car will be fully reimbursed at market value. You’ll also receive compensation for emotional distress and all medical expenses,” the officer said.
“In addition, because of the physical harm and severe psychological intimidation you endured, the court has already made a decision. The main perpetrator, Ms. Lin, was convicted of assault and attempted kidnapping and sentenced to three years in prison. The accomplices, including Ms. Song, received one-year sentences.”
Emmy froze for a second, then felt a rush of happiness.
She didn’t know much about legal stuff, but she was pretty sure something like this usually only meant a few days in jail or a fine—definitely not such heavy sentences.
Still, whatever the reason, they totally deserved it.
She grinned, her eyes crinkling. “Officer, you guys are amazing! I’m really happy with the outcome. All good on my end!”
On the other end, the officer wiped sweat from his forehead, feeling the pressure.
James had called in person to ask about the case. There was no way the police could get away with doing anything less than their absolute best. Of course, the case was handled fast and “well.”
Meanwhile, at the detention center, the group fell apart the moment they heard the verdict.
None of them had thought something this “minor” would actually land them in prison.
