Abriella fished a pen from her bag and handed it over, grumbling, “Yeah, I brought one. I’m Steve’s assistant now, and that guy is so lazy he makes me carry everything for him.”

Emmy took the pen, quickly scribbling a few addresses on the last page of the file. She asked casually, “Did you two patch things up?”

Abriella let out a long sigh and leaned against the balcony rail.

“Not really,” she said.

“I needed a job at a law firm, and he needed an assistant. We signed a deal—if I stick it out for a year, he’ll take me to see my foster parents.”

Emmy knew about Abriella’s foster parents. They were a simple farming couple living way out in the countryside. Abriella had been trafficked there as a kid, but those two loved her like their own daughter. Abriella’s fearless attitude was partly thanks to the trouble she faced in that village, but just as much because her foster parents spoiled her without holding back.

When they first became friends, all Abriella talked about was the carefree life in her village, never about city glamour or money.

But her biological parents treated that whole chapter of her life like an embarrassment and forced her to cut off all contact with her foster family.

It was so unfair to her.

Lost in thought, Emmy finished writing the last address and handed the file over.

“These five places—they’re all properties my dad bought for her and her daughter.”

Abriella’s eyes went huge as she took the file.

“All of these? How do you even know about them?”

Emmy gave a wry smile and didn’t say a word.

She’d found out about them in her last life, after Cooper died and she ended up running his whole estate. The properties were bought in total secrecy. No wonder Abriella and the others never found anything.

Abriella scanned the list, whistling.

“Man, these neighborhoods are crazy expensive! Looks like he was stashing away a lot more cash than we thought. What a jerk.”

After venting, she noticed Emmy had gone quiet.

Abriella slipped the file away and gently nudged Emmy’s arm.

“Hey, you okay?”
