Evelina’s face fell in an instant, her expression turning stormy.

Dean was discharged just yesterday. He’d promised he’d come take care of her, but work kept getting in the way. She hadn’t seen even a shadow of him.

She gripped the bag of medicine tighter, refusing to show any weakness. “Of course he’s busy with work. Not everyone has as much free time as you, you know?”

Then her eyes flicked over to Emmy. “Emmy’s picking up her own meds too, isn’t she? Looks like your guy isn’t so reliable either.”

Abriella snapped back without missing a beat. “Her husband’s injured, it’s not the same. I remember when Mr. Sparrow was dating our Emmy—he’d drop everything, no matter how important, just to be there for her.”

She clicked her tongue, giving Evelina a once-over, her gaze dripping with disdain.

“Honestly, compared to that, Dean doesn’t seem all that into you.”

That hit Evelina right where it hurt. Her cheeks flushed bright red with anger.

“That’s only because Emmy kept clinging to him, begging for his attention! I’m not the kind of person who puts herself above everything else!”

Abriella rolled her eyes. “Oh please, like you never did the same. Too bad for you—now Dean cares more about his job than about you.”

Evelina looked ready to explode, but Emmy stepped in, voice cool and even. “Evelina, just focus on recovering. See you at the competition.”

With that, she grabbed Abriella, who was still itching for a fight, and pulled her into the pharmacy.

Before the door swung shut, Abriella tossed one last jab over her shoulder. “Anyone can talk big—doesn’t mean anything!”

Evelina was shaking, barely holding herself together as she glared after them.

The calmer Emmy was, the more it unsettled her. Evelina couldn’t help but feel like Emmy had some secret ace up her sleeve, something guaranteed to win.

She clenched her fists so hard her nails dug into her palms.

No way. She wasn’t going to let Emmy take the gold. That award belonged to her, and her alone.

Inside the pharmacy, Emmy picked up her medication while Abriella finally let her frustration spill out.
