Lorelei stared at her, icy confidence radiating from every inch of her. It was the kind of intimidating presence you only pick up on real battlefields, forged through chaos and survival—enough to make any sheltered girl’s knees buckle.
But Emmy didn’t flinch. She stood tall, back straight, eyes clear and unwavering. Not even a hint of nervousness. Instead, there was a stubbornness in her gaze—a quiet defiance that met Lorelei’s challenge head-on.
Lorelei narrowed her eyes. This girl had guts. No question. It was almost funny how that fierce energy clashed with her soft, peaches-and-cream looks. James… was this kind of contradiction his thing?
When the silence stretched, Emmy finally spoke, her voice edged with impatience. “Is there something else, Dr. Hall? If not, I need to get back to my husband.”
Lorelei’s expression barely flickered. “Did he ever tell you about us? About our past?”
Emmy’s lips pressed into a thin line. “No.”
A cold, almost mocking smile curved on Lorelei’s lips. “Of course he didn’t. Why would he? You can go.”
Something twisted in Emmy’s chest. She walked to the door, hand on the handle, but stopped and looked back.
“Dr. Hall, I know you and James have history.” Her tone was calm, almost cool. “But whatever you feel for him, he’s married now. I hope you want the best for us.”
She paused, her voice dropping even colder. “Because honestly, if we divorced, it wouldn’t be good for him.”
With that, Emmy slipped out, shutting the door behind her.
Lorelei’s chest rose and fell with anger. She yanked a pen from her lab coat pocket and, without thinking, snapped it clean in half.
Outside, Emmy let out a long, shaky breath. She glanced back at the closed door, frowning. Their past? What exactly happened between Lorelei and James?
She pushed the thought aside and headed back to James’s hospital room.
After breakfast, she cracked open her laptop and dove into her work. Not long after, someone dropped off a laptop for James, too.
