At noon, the firehouse crew showed up—a pack of big, broad-shouldered guys who packed themselves into the hospital room, each one shouting “James” like they wanted to blow the roof off with their noise.
Emmy slipped out, giving them space to catch up. She leaned against the wall, finally letting herself breathe, but the relief didn’t last. When she looked up, she locked eyes with Evelina down the hall.
Before she could react, the door to the dressing room swung open and Claudia walked out. Claudia’s head was wrapped in fresh bandages. She followed her daughter’s gaze, and when her eyes landed on Emmy, there wasn’t a hint of embarrassment or resentment—nothing you’d expect from someone who’d just been hit over the head. Instead, Claudia flashed Emmy a sly, satisfied smile.
A bad feeling crept up Emmy’s spine.
She’d hit Claudia, but Claudia hadn’t come after her, not once. Emmy didn’t buy that Claudia was just swallowing her anger, and she definitely didn’t trust Dean’s promise to “handle it.” Claudia was the last person to let things go.
What was she planning?
Before Emmy could dwell on it, her phone started buzzing in her pocket. It was Rory from Starlight Corporation’s tech department.
“Ms. Lincoln, there’s a problem. Someone’s filed a big lawsuit against The Dome, accusing us of massive tech infringement, and they want Starlight to pull The Dome from every platform right away.”
Emmy’s brows knitted together. Now she understood Claudia’s smile—this was what she’d been waiting for.
“What’s Starlight saying?” Emmy asked, her voice tense. She was the company’s biggest shareholder. They should have her back, no question.
Rory sounded defeated. “Mr. Carter says to protect Starlight’s reputation, he’s already decided to take The Dome offline by the end of the day.”
Emmy let out a short, frustrated laugh. She ended the call and dialed Juan, the company’s CEO.
He picked up right away, his voice as warm as always. “Emmy, how’s your mom doing?”
No small talk. Emmy cut straight to the point. “Juan, can’t you see someone’s coming after The Dome? This isn’t just business—it’s personal.”
He was silent for a moment before sighing. “If this gets any bigger, it’ll hurt Starlight. But don’t worry, I’ll take it down for now and figure out how to clear your name later.”
Empty words. Emmy had heard it all before.
She interrupted, “If you take down The Dome, you won’t be CEO for much longer. I mean it.”
