Her voice dropped, cold and menacing. “Dean, if you show that woman even a shred of mercy today, I can’t guarantee she’ll make it to your wedding with Evelina.”
The air around Dean went icy in an instant. The thing he hated most in the world was being threatened.
“You so much as touch her, and I’ll gladly call off this wedding. I won’t marry your daughter.”
He didn’t bother with another glance. He turned and stormed right out of the hospital room.
“Dean!” Evelina’s panic spiked—she started after him.
“Get back here!” Claudia’s voice snapped like a whip.
She watched Dean’s angry figure disappear, her eyes full of contempt and venom. “Let him go. I really want to see if he’s got what it takes to save the Dome.”
“And don’t forget, with your little lapdog in play, the Dome’s coming down tonight for sure.”
That ‘lapdog’ was Juan, CEO of Starlight Corporation. Even though Evelina was about to marry Dean, Juan was still head over heels for her.
“Mom!” Evelina stomped her foot. “Dean hates being threatened. How could you use Emmy against him?”
Claudia shot her a cold glare. “Don’t get me started on you. Is this the same man you swore had already cut Emmy off, treated her like an enemy?”
Evelina bit her lip so hard it almost bled. “He does hate her. He’s convinced Teresa had something to do with his mother’s death. But they grew up together. He only took her in as a sister.”
“The only reason I got this far, the only reason he’ll even marry me, is because I always play it cool. I never say a bad word about Emmy around him. I make sure I’m the only one who understands him.”
“Mom, what you did today will only push him further away!”
“I don’t need you teaching me how to handle men.” Claudia cut her off, looking down on her like she’d seen it all.
“Stop obsessing over Dean for a minute and look at who you’re competing with. Do you even know who Emmy’s getting close to now? Mr. Nelson.”
“That man has it all—family, power, looks. What doesn’t he have over Dean? If you’re really as good as you claim, you should be going after him.”
“Mr. Nelson… Jamie?” Evelina repeated, jealousy flashing in her eyes.
If it weren’t for that charity gala—if she hadn’t slipped Emmy something, hoping she’d embarrass herself in front of Mr. Nelson and get tossed out in disgrace…
But things went sideways. That drink ended up being the start of something between them.
