James stayed silent, his brow furrowed and his expression downright stormy.
Tyler, on the other hand, acted like James was a total stranger. “Is this Ms. Lincoln’s husband? You two look great together,” he said with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.
Emmy just smiled and said, “I’ll go wait for Mr. Nelson in the private room.” She squeezed James’s arm and pulled him into the elevator, not giving him a chance to argue.
As soon as the elevator doors slid shut, the executives behind Tyler all wiped sweat from their brows, looking like they’d just dodged a bullet.
“Wait… was that Mr. Nelson? Or am I losing it?”
“No way. Mr. Nelson would never dress like that! And besides, didn’t he just call him his brother?”
Finally, one of them couldn’t help but glance nervously at Tyler. “Mr. Nelson, um… why does that guy look so much like you?”
Tyler stared at the closed elevator for a moment, then shrugged. “Plenty of people look alike. It’s not that weird.”
Everyone breathed a huge sigh of relief.
Thank goodness. Anyone but him.
Because in the whole Nelson Corporation, the person everyone truly feared wasn’t Tyler in his wheelchair. Tyler might have been the face of the company, but after his accident, he’d lost his edge. His decisions weren’t as sharp anymore.
It was James, the brother with no official title, who actually held more shares and assets than Tyler. Whenever there was a tough decision Tyler couldn’t make, it was always James who stepped in to call the shots.
Everyone in the city’s upper crust knew the truth: the real Mr. Nelson—the one who got things done, the one people whispered about—was James. He was the one everyone watched out for.
Meanwhile, inside the elevator, Emmy looked up at James and blurted out, “So, do you know Mr. Nelson?”
James kept his eyes down, his voice icy. “He’s the one who invited you?”
“Yeah.” She leaned against the railing, explaining, “I stopped by to see my grandma this afternoon and just ran into him. He insisted on thanking me, so he set up this dinner.”
She glanced around at the ridiculously fancy elevator, even the air vents covered in intricate patterns, and let out a low whistle. “You have no idea how expensive this place is. I’ve only been here twice.”
