Emmy’s glare was icy as she dodged his grubby hand, her brows knitting together in disgust.
“Don’t test me. I’ll scream for help right now if you try anything.”
She squared up to him, her voice clear and steady. “Shawn, you really think you can just do whatever you want here? This isn’t that kind of place.”
Shawn’s hand hovered, then slowly dropped. He shot her a mocking smile, eyes narrowing with contempt.
“Oh? So you know not everyone can get in here, huh? Then tell me—which big shot brought you in tonight?”
He looked her up and down, his gaze slick and hungry, like a snake about to strike. He didn’t even try to hide what he wanted.
“I heard you rushed into a marriage with some nobody firefighter. That’s gotta be dull. Marry me instead, why don’t you? At least with me, you’ll never have to beg for an invitation.”
Everyone in their crowd knew Emmy was the most stunning girl among the socialites—no contest. And if Dean hadn’t guarded her so closely, Shawn would’ve made his move long ago.
Now that Dean was out of the picture, Emmy was just easy prey.
Realizing what he was after, Emmy’s heart hammered in her chest. She quickly stepped back, voice rising as she shouted, “Somebody, help!”
Shawn just laughed, his smirk growing nastier. “Go ahead, scream. If anyone comes, all they’ll see is you blocking the men’s room, trying to seduce me.”
“Dean dumped you, Emmy. Stop pretending you’re innocent. It’s my turn to see what you’re like.”
He lunged for her.
Emmy spun and bolted toward the men’s room, shouting without thinking, “James! James!”
Shawn hesitated for a second, then his eyes lit up with excitement.
“Who are you calling for? Go ahead, shout all you want. Dean’s not here!”
“And even if he was, so what? He already tossed you aside. You’re nothing but leftovers.”
He didn’t get the chance to say anything else.
A shadow shot down the hallway, and before Shawn could react, a brutal kick sent him flying into the wall.
The impact echoed down the corridor as Shawn crumpled to the floor, groaning.
He didn’t even have time to catch his breath before a strong hand grabbed him by the collar and yanked him up.
Then came a flurry of punches—hard and unrelenting.
Emmy, who’d just ducked into the bathroom, heard the chaos outside. She poked her head out—and froze.
James didn’t say a word, just kept landing blow after blow, so fast and fierce Shawn couldn’t even cry out.
