Everyone in the room was eyeing her with open, hungry intent, like they were just waiting for an excuse to pounce.
These guys had a reputation for chasing after women, and now, with a gorgeous, innocent girl like Emmy right in front of them, they were practically drooling. The only reason they hadn’t made a move before was because Dean always kept a close watch on her. But now that he wasn’t around, they were all itching to be the first to take advantage.
James’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles cracked.
Emmy slid her hand over his and pressed down, her voice low. “Don’t do anything. I’ve got this.”
She raised her head and flashed them a cool, playful smile. “You want me to hang out with you? I just hope you’re brave enough. Or lucky enough to walk away in one piece.”
The group burst out laughing. Someone jeered, “Oh, please, you really think Dean still cares about you? Wake up. He’s all about Evelina now. You’re nothing.”
The others laughed even harder.
Emmy didn’t flinch. “Who said I needed Dean to protect me?”
Her gaze swept across them, her eyes almost sympathetic. “I was invited here by Mr. Nelson himself. If you’re trying to mess with me, you’re disrespecting him. And that’s not a good idea.”
She let the silence hang for a second, then went on, “You’ve all heard the rumors, right? The last person who pissed off Mr. Nelson disappeared overnight. No one’s seen a trace of him since.”
She leaned in, her smile turning sharp. “So, which one of you wants to see what Mr. Nelson does to people who cross him?”
Everyone in the room knew the stories. Tyler Nelson was known for being gentle, even when people insulted him for being in a wheelchair. He’d just laugh it off.
But his younger brother, Mr. Nelson, was a different breed. He was ruthless—the kind of guy everyone secretly feared. He never let anyone insult his brother. The last time someone tried, their whole family was ruined: the men sent off to some hellish mine in the Middle East, the women trafficked to the worst corners of Southeast Asia. Not a single trace left behind.
Mr. Nelson was the one person in this city nobody dared to mess with.
Someone’s legs nearly gave out, but another tried to save face, yelling, “You’re full of it! As if Mr. Nelson would invite you!”
Right then, the hotel manager rushed in, bowing respectfully to Emmy.
“Ms. Lincoln, Mr. Nelson asked me to apologize for tonight’s roulette situation. He’s reserved the penthouse suite for you and your companion. He sincerely hopes you’ll accept.”
