This year’s charity gala was a whole different level of fancy, all because Tyler Nelson—the president himself—decided to host it. Everything was bigger, flashier, more extravagant than before.
Tyler had just gotten out of the hospital not long ago, and a bunch of people who’d wanted to visit but never found the chance were treating this gala as their golden ticket. Everyone wanted in, hoping to rub shoulders and maybe score some favors.
By the time Emmy walked into the ballroom on James’s arm, the place was already packed. Voices overlapped in a cloud of laughter and chatter, designer perfume and expensive suits everywhere.
But Emmy hadn’t even taken three steps inside before running straight into the last two people she wanted to see.
Across the room, Evelina strolled in, clinging to her mother Claudia’s arm. Evelina spotted Emmy and shot her a look from a distance, chin tilted just a little too high, a smug smile playing on her lips.
Emmy had no idea what Evelina was so proud of. Sure, Claudia had thrown around enough money to spin the story online, but facts were facts—they’d still lost the Skyline System.
Emmy was out of the hospital and healed up, but she hadn’t set foot back at Starlight Corporation. And if things kept going like this, even if she did nothing, Juan wouldn’t let her keep her Deputy Director position in the tech department for long.
By all rights, Evelina had lost—completely.
But Evelina’s pride didn’t last. Her gaze slid to the man beside Emmy and just stuck there. She grabbed her mother’s arm tighter, voice barely hiding the jealousy and awe. “Mom, look at him… How does Emmy get so lucky? Even her random marriage gets her a guy like that!”
Claudia followed her daughter’s stare.
James was dressed in a pure white suit—a color that should have made him seem gentle, but on him, it just made his wild, untamed aura even clearer.
Claudia had met plenty of men in her life, but even she had to admit—this one was next-level. The sheer force of his presence, that raw masculine energy, hit her the second she looked at him. Evelina’s reaction made sense. Claudia herself felt a little flutter.
No wonder Evelina was so obsessed with winning James over.
But that wasn’t the point tonight.
Claudia pulled her gaze away and lowered her voice, “Focus on Mr. Nelson. Land him, and you can have any man you want.”
With that, she led Evelina off toward another crowd.
Emmy caught all of it—the envy, the longing in Evelina’s eyes. Typical, she thought. Evelina really did fall for every guy she met. Poor Dean, Emmy mused. He’d been head over heels for Evelina, and for what?
She tightened her grip on James’s arm and steered him toward a quieter lounge area.
She frowned, lowering her voice. “Are you sure there’s really no evidence tying those mercenaries to Claudia? I just can’t believe she’ll let this go. I keep thinking she’ll try something else to hurt you. I wish we could just catch her red-handed and have her arrested.”
She clicked her tongue, annoyed with herself. She should’ve started recording with her phone that day outside the hospital room. Not that it would have mattered, with the door closed—she probably wouldn’t have caught anything useful.
