Tonight’s charity gala was hosted by Mr. Nelson himself, and security was easily twice as tight as usual. This wasn’t the kind of party where just anyone could sneak in.
With her wedding ring sparkling on her finger, Emmy knew everyone would get the hint.
James gave a quiet nod. “Go on.”
Emmy flashed him a satisfied smile and turned to leave. She’d barely taken two steps when she caught the sight of two glamorous socialites heading their way, both of them openly checking out James.
She stopped, spun around, and without warning, took James’s face gently in her hands and kissed him—a quick, soft kiss right on the lips, no hesitation at all.
Her eyes curved into a smile as she whispered, “Wait for me here, okay, honey?”
With that, she straightened up and sauntered away on her heels, gliding past the two stunned women like she didn’t even see them.
James’s thumb brushed over his lips, and a helpless smile tugged at his mouth.
But as soon as Emmy disappeared into the crowd, his smile faded. Instantly, his whole vibe changed—cold and commanding, with that unmistakable Mr. Nelson aura that made people instinctively step back.
A few women who’d been working up their nerve to approach him suddenly felt a chill run down their spines. Their legs went weak, and no one dared come any closer.
James lounged back on the sofa, absently spinning his wedding band around his finger, his eyes turning dark and unreadable.
A few moments later, an assistant hurried over and whispered something in his ear. James stood up and followed him out a side door, disappearing from the ballroom.
Meanwhile, Emmy was chatting with the president of the charity association on behalf of her mother, Teresa.
Teresa ran her own foundation and was its president, and she also held an important board position at the association.
A lot of people at the gala had read online about the drama in the Lincoln family and came up to Emmy, offering their sympathy for Teresa. Emmy handled it all gracefully, thanking each person in turn.
While they talked, a lady nearby lowered her voice, excitement obvious as she whispered to her friend, “Mr. Nelson really came! I saw him from a distance—he has such a strong presence!”
“Too bad, though. He only sat with his brother, Mr. Nelson, for a bit, then went straight upstairs to his suite.”
Another woman sighed. “Ugh, still no luck seeing Mr. Nelson up close tonight.”
“Right? Him showing up at all is a huge deal for Mr. Nelson. Just look at all these people—half of them are here because of him!”
The group kept gossiping about the mysterious Mr. Nelson.
