Cooper suddenly changed gears. “But that five percent—I want to transfer it to your husband.”
It was just like all those years ago, when Mr. Drennon handed over five percent of Starlight Corporation’s shares to him. That unexpected windfall had set all his ambition on fire.
He’d gone from a broke nobody who’d never even brushed shoulders with high society to a shareholder in a Fortune 500 company overnight. His whole world flipped upside down.
He didn’t stress about next month’s rent anymore. Now his worries were about who he should network with today, which fancy event to attend tomorrow, and how to keep climbing higher.
He believed history would repeat itself.
Drop that five percent in the lap of a broke firefighter, and the same thing would happen—ambition would change him, too.
Once you feed someone’s ambition, there’s no putting it back in the cage.
Sooner or later, the firefighter would probably end up just like he had, eyeing even more shares from his wife.
Cooper wouldn’t have to do a thing. Ambition would eat James up from the inside, and he’d end up dragging Emmy down with him.
Emmy wasn’t easy to deal with—she had every right to her position and knew how to hold her ground. But a hungry, social-climbing husband? Cooper had handled guys like that before.
The idea made a strange excitement flicker in Cooper’s eyes. He grabbed a contract from his assistant, one clearly ready to go.
He scribbled his signature, then slid the contract across the table to Emmy.
“I’ve already signed. Just take it home and have your husband sign it.”
Emmy scanned the contract. It didn’t take her long to figure out what Cooper was playing at.
To keep her from having full control of the company, he wanted to split the shares. He was even thinking about propping up a new “ambitious nobody” to keep her in check, just like her mother had been.
Nice try.
Too bad James wasn’t that guy.
As long as she could get Cooper’s shares, it didn’t matter whose name was on them.
She picked up the contract and shrugged. “Sure.”
Cooper jumped in right away. “Then go find Mr. Nelson now. Tell him to let Evelina go.”
Emmy looked up, her eyes cool and clear, with an innocent air that almost sparkled. “What’s the hurry? I need to bring the contract home, have my husband sign it, and get a lawyer to notarize everything. That’s the only way it’s official, right?”
Cooper’s face changed instantly. “What’s that supposed to mean? You don’t trust me?”
Emmy laughed. “What if I save her now, and you turn around and go back on your word? Who would I even complain to?”
If he hadn’t already broken his word—if he hadn’t sent her uncle to get her mother—she might have agreed without a second thought.
Lesson learned.
With someone as shameless as Cooper, you had to keep everything in your own hands before taking the next step.
