Teresa sucked in a sharp breath.

Everyone in their circle knew exactly what Shadow Core was. She fell silent for a moment, a cold glint flickering in her eyes. In her opinion, Evelina got what she deserved.

Her gaze drifted to her daughter’s pale neck, where a few faint red marks stood out under the light, just barely hidden by her collar. Teresa couldn’t help but smile knowingly, her tone turning playful. “Alright, you and James should head back to your apartment and get some rest. I’ve got nurses here—you don’t need to worry about me.”

But Emmy shook her head. “We’re not going home. The room next door is still ours for the night. We’ll stay there, so if you need anything, just call.”

The second the couple left, the dignified look on Teresa’s face vanished. She waved Ivy over, barely able to contain her excitement.

“Did you see that, Ivy? Did you see?” She grinned, lowering her voice but not her enthusiasm. “I have a feeling I’m going to be holding a grandbaby soon!”

Ivy laughed quietly, joining in. “I saw, I saw! Miss Emmy and James are so sweet together. I bumped into them in the hallway—couldn’t believe how tightly they were holding hands. Like they’d never let go.”

Teresa basked in the thought for a moment, but then her smile faded and she sighed.

“I just don’t get what’s going on with the Nelson family. Things have come this far, but his parents still haven’t even met me. It makes me uneasy. I always imagined Emmy would have a beautiful wedding, something she could remember forever. She can’t just get married quietly, like it’s nothing.”

Ivy hesitated before suggesting, “Maybe you could talk to James? See what’s going on?”

Teresa thought about it, then shook her head. “Forget it. Every family has their own story. James is such a steady, thoughtful kid. If he hasn’t brought it up, he must have his reasons. If we ask, it’ll just make things harder for him.”

Ivy nodded, trying to reassure her. “I’m sure James’s parents are good people. They raised such a great son. He never comes empty-handed and he takes such good care of Miss Emmy. Her stomach hasn’t acted up in ages. She’s eating better, and I swear she’s even put on a little weight.”

Teresa felt a little better hearing that, but her eyes still drifted down to her legs under the thin blanket. “It’s my health holding them back. If I wasn’t stuck here, they probably would’ve had the wedding already.”

Ivy jumped in, “Oh, ma’am, don’t say that. Focus on getting better. When you’re out of here, you can throw the biggest, most beautiful wedding. There’s still time.”

“And besides, Miss Emmy’s got so much going on right now. She’s so busy, I doubt she’s even thinking about a wedding.”

Teresa sighed again, falling quiet, but the worry on her face lingered.
