“With a waist this tiny, I really might’ve gone too hard. Next time, I’ll be more gentle.”
Emmy shot him a mortified look, cheeks flushed, and quickly hid her face in the pillow.
“My legs are sore too. Massage a little lower,” she mumbled, voice muffled.
James obediently moved his hands down, following her instructions without hesitation.
But after just a few seconds, Emmy twisted away, giggling uncontrollably as tingles raced across her skin.
“Okay, that’s enough!” she blurted out. “I’m tired. I need to sleep!”
James took his hands away, but the mattress dipped even deeper beside her.
He stretched out next to her, pulling her into his arms with one smooth move, then tugged the blanket over both of them.
Emmy didn’t bother resisting anymore. Maybe it was the comfort of his embrace, or maybe the massage actually helped, but she was out like a light, her breathing slow and steady in no time.
James, though, stayed awake.
He lay on his side, watching her in the soft glow from the lamp, tracing every feature with his eyes.
Her brows were light and fine, like they’d been painted on with a tiny brush. Her lashes were long and thick, casting gentle shadows onto her cheeks. Her nose was round and soft, with a hint of baby fat in her profile—he always wanted to reach out and pinch it.
But it was her lips that drew him in most of all—always soft and full, always tempting him, without even trying.
Right now, she looked so peaceful, so soft and unguarded. She reminded him of a little white rabbit curled up in the palm of a hunter’s hand, sleeping soundly with no idea of the world around her.
James finally let out a long breath, hugging her a little tighter before finally closing his eyes.

The next morning, Emmy had barely stepped into her mother’s hospital room before Ivy hurried over to pull her aside.
“Miss Emmy,” Ivy whispered, barely hiding her satisfaction, “Evelina was admitted again in the middle of the night! I heard it was serious. She was unconscious when they brought her in and the doctors worked on her for over three hours just to keep her alive.”
Emmy felt a flicker of curiosity, but hesitated to ask for more details.
Ivy, catching her thoughts right away, leaned in and lowered her voice.
