Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 293

That one simple text made Emmy’s lips curl up, even though she tried to hide it.

Ever since her stomach trouble under the overpass, he’d basically become her own personal alarm clock. If he couldn’t be with her, he’d send her reminders right on time. If she didn’t snap a pic of her meal and send it over, he’d either show up himself with food—never missing an excuse to steal a kiss, which always left her rushing to fix her makeup—or a delivery guy would appear at her door with dinner and a not-so-subtle message: “Don’t even think about skipping a bite.”

Emmy couldn’t help but laugh. She found a clean little restaurant nearby, ordered some food, and sent him a photo like a student reporting to her teacher. After she’d finished every last bite, she took a picture of her empty plate and sent that too.

His reply came fast—a goofy, animated kiss emoji.

Her face got warm. She sent back one of those giggling, hand-over-mouth emojis, feeling a little silly but loving it anyway. Who would’ve thought that someone as serious and self-controlled as Captain James could be so flirty in private, always finding ways to make her blush—even through a screen.

After her long day, it was already evening by the time she got back to the hospital. She changed into her workout clothes and jogged a few laps around the park, breaking a light sweat. When she got back, she headed straight for the shower.

She was halfway through rinsing her hair when—

Bang!

A loud crash sounded from the next room, like something heavy had slammed to the ground. Emmy’s heart jumped. She quickly shut off the water, the sudden silence making the noise next door even sharper.

Through the wall, she could hear Evelina’s voice, rough and wild.

“Get out! Get out! All of you, leave!”

A knock sounded at her own bathroom door. James’s deep voice came through, calm and steady.

“I’m right outside. Don’t worry.”

Relief washed over her. Just hearing his voice made everything feel safe again. She couldn’t help but smile as she turned the water back on. With him around, nothing seemed as scary.

When she finished and stepped out, towel drying her hair, James was there leaning against the wall by the door, tall and relaxed.

“If Mom’s well enough, I’d like to take her home,” Emmy said, hesitating for a second. “We can’t go back to the old house though. Maybe… could you get your apartment ready for her?”

James walked over, his voice gentle. “Our new place is empty. The renovations will be finished in a couple of days. We can take Mom there—and move in ourselves.”

She remembered how he’d once mentioned buying a place for them, but she’d always pictured a tiny apartment.
