After Dean hung up, he spun around, jaw tight.
The door to the hospital room across the hall was already closed.
He was just about to knock when a cold voice sliced through the air behind him.
“Mr. Sparrow, Evelina should be calm now. Why don’t you go see her?”
Dean turned, eyes bloodshot, staring Claudia down with a fury so sharp it made even her—someone who’d seen it all—tense up.
Claudia crossed her arms and leaned against the wall, trying to play it cool. “Evelina’s really shaken right now. She needs you.”
Dean’s lips curled into a cold, mocking smile. “Funny. Isn’t it your fault she ended up like this? Some mother you turned out to be.”
Claudia’s heart skipped. The second he said it, she knew—he’d uncovered everything.
Her face hardened. “Yes, I underestimated Mr. Nelson’s methods. But if Emmy hadn’t messed up my plans, Evelina wouldn’t be the one in that bed right now.”
“Oh? Who would it be then? Emmy?” His voice was low and barely controlled, all anger and wildness. “I told you—don’t touch her. Did you think I was joking?”
Claudia flinched at the anger radiating from him. For a moment, she actually felt guilty.
The dinner party two nights ago was a mess—her precious daughter had almost died, and instead of getting in good with Mr. Nelson, she’d just managed to piss off Dean, too.
She tried to defend herself. “If Emmy hadn’t forced her way in, how would she have ended up alone with Mr. Nelson? Honestly, she got lucky—she walked out unharmed and even got Mr. Nelson’s attention. She should be thanking me.”
Dean’s jaw worked, like he was fighting to hold it together. “She has me. That’s enough. I’m not letting this go.”
With that, he turned and stormed off, anger rolling off him in waves.
“Dean!” Claudia called after him. “You’re just going to leave Evelina like this? She’s the real victim here!”
Dean stopped, shoulders stiff.
He let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Weren’t you the one so eager to throw her at Mr. Nelson? Why pretend to care about her fiancé now?”
He paused for a second, then added, “I’m calling off the engagement. Claudia’s daughter is out of my league.”
