Emmy didn’t really have an excuse to leave, so she grabbed Abriella’s arm and grinned.
“Yeah, my husband and I just finished fixing up our new place here. We’ll probably move in soon.”
She paused, glancing at Isabel. “Which building are you in, Isabel?”
Isabel gave her apartment number.
Emmy’s eyes widened. “Seriously? We’re in the building right next door!”
But Isabel’s attention was already on Abriella, and the look she gave her couldn’t have been more obvious if she tried.
“Abriella, why do you always act like you’ve seen a ghost when you see me? I’m not going to bite.”
Abriella rolled her eyes. “Aren’t you Mandy’s best friend? If I so much as say a word to you, she’s going to run home crying, telling everyone I’m trying to steal her friends now too.”
Mandy was the Sullivan family’s adopted daughter, taken in after Abriella was kidnapped.
Because Isabel and Mandy were close—and the Sullivan and Summer families did business together—the Sullivans always seemed to care more about Mandy.
Even after Abriella came back, the house never really felt like home again.
Mandy had her own property and shares in Sullivan Inc., while Abriella had nothing.
Whenever the family showed Abriella the slightest bit of kindness, Mandy would throw a tantrum—crying, screaming, threatening to hurt herself—until everyone was walking on eggshells.
Abriella had spent years feeling like an outsider, so whenever she left the Sullivan house, she put up walls. Nobody dared mess with her—not even Mandy, who only had the guts to pick on her at home, with their parents around.
Now, with Abriella being so blunt, Isabel’s smile went stiff for a second, but she bounced back quickly, still sounding friendly.
“I have lots of friends, you know. Emmy’s one of my besties, too.”
She stepped closer to Abriella and held out her hand. “Let’s be friends. We’re all neighbors now, right? Let’s hang out.”
