“Went home to see your folks?” Grandma’s disappointment was impossible to miss. “Well, isn’t that just perfect,” she sighed, scanning her two grandsons with a weary look.
“You two really need to treat your wives better. Otherwise, what girl in her right mind would want to marry into a family like ours?” She turned to Emmy, suddenly finding an ally.
“You don’t know what I’ve been dealing with, sweetheart. These two? Just like their old granddad—cold as ice, impossible to warm up. You’d think they didn’t even have a heart sometimes, the way they act with everyone.”
“If it weren’t for the family business or carrying on the Nelson name, I bet they’d both be single for life.”
Her voice softened, eyes growing distant as she looked away. “All I hope for is that someone can show them what a real home feels like. Let them know what it’s like to come back to a hot meal, or to see a light left on just for them. I just want them to live like real people, with warmth in their hearts.”
Her words hung in the air. The room went completely quiet.
James pressed his lips together. Suddenly, he reached out with his fork, put a piece of tender pork into Grandma’s bowl, and said in a rough voice, “Grandma, eat something.”
Emmy lowered her head, quietly taking a bite of her food. She didn’t really know the Nelson family—she’d only heard the rumors about how tough they were. But for this grandma to raise Tyler and Jamie, who seemed decent enough on the surface, she must have been pretty amazing.
Just then, the caretaker rushed in, looking nervous. “Mr. Nelson, sir, your parents are here.”
The words had barely left her mouth when the warmth drained from both Tyler and James’s faces. Their expressions went hard, tense, a mix of annoyance and unease. They exchanged a glance.
Without warning, James stood up fast and grabbed Emmy’s wrist. His voice was low and urgent. “Come with me.”
His grip was strong and he moved quickly, nearly dragging Emmy along. She stumbled, and the porcelain bowl in front of her clattered to the floor, soup splashing everywhere.
“What are they doing here!” Grandma was shaking with anger, her breathing turning sharp. “Tell them to get out of my house!”
But Emmy barely heard her. James was already pulling her out of the dining room, down the hallway, and out to the backyard.
