Emmy had only been sitting in the car for a few minutes when Abriella burst in, flinging the door open and throwing herself onto the seat. She was breathless, eyes wide with panic.
She didn’t even bother to catch her breath before yelling at the driver.
“Micah, just drive! Go, hurry!”
Emmy couldn’t help laughing at her friend’s mess of nerves.
“What’s with you? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Abriella clutched her chest, still shaken.
“Worse than a ghost! Way, way worse!”
Emmy raised an eyebrow, guessing,
“Wait… was it Mr. and Mrs. Nelson?”
Abriella whipped around, shocked.
“You ran into them?”
“No,” Emmy shook her head. “Mr. Nelson took me out the back way through Grandma’s garden.”
Abriella sagged in her seat, letting out a huge sigh of relief.
“Thank god. Those two are scarier than the Grim Reaper.”
Emmy had heard stories. Mr. Nelson was basically leading the polls for president next year, and Mrs. Nelson had a top job in government too. Lately, their family had been throwing charity events left and right, getting all kinds of good press ahead of the election.
“They can’t be that terrifying,” Emmy teased. “Mr. Nelson might be the next President.”
Abriella sat up, face twisted in disgust.
“If you get a vote, don’t give it to him!”
“Why not?” Emmy asked, confused.
Abriella glanced up at the front seat, then hit the button to raise the privacy divider. Only then did she lean in, voice dropping to a whisper like she was sharing a national secret.
